Don't know about the Studio, but is working fine on a M1 MacBook Pro 14. It should be ok with the Studio

It work with MacBook Air with USB-C, such as 2018/2019 version, BUT 2015 version without USB-C PORT.

Can this be used to extend the desktop or only to replicate the laptop's screen?

I used it with an Imac and was able to extend the desktop. I would expect that with windows it would be the same. I have used other monitor adapters in windows and can extend. I expect the same with this adapter.
