Baldr Digital Alarm Atomic Clock, 7'' Display with Adjustable Brightness

I consider myself technically challenged. Having said that, I had no issues whatsoever with setting up and successfully using the Baldr atomic electric clock. I purchased it because I'm tired of having to change my headboard alarm clock every time the US changes the time in March and November. I particularly like this clock for the following reasons: 1. The ease of dimming it at night; I previously laid a cloth across my old alarm clock to block the light at night; this clock is so easy to just touch the top and it dims once, and then touch again and it dims very dark, almost completely black. There was no discernable shine into the room. When looking directly at the dimmed clock in the dark, I could barely see a faint gray outline of the time. I'm happy with this. 2. The ease of setting up the clock. The instructions were easy to follow; I did do a manual set up the first time to be sure I could, and I intentionally set the time a little off. Once I got the correct time zone assigned, the clock eventually synched up from Colorado to the exact time. It took a few hours before it synched, so a note to be patient if this is your first atomic clock. 3. Super happy with overall display. Love the size of the letters and numbers and can see them from anywhere in the room; I placed this clock on my storage headboard. Love the date display, the day of the week display, the indoor temperature display (which is accurate for my home), the humidity display and the moon phase display. At this point, there is nothing that I don't like. Note: I haven't used the clock alarm; I typically use my phone alarm. So I won't rate the clock alarm for this review. I already use several BALDR indoor/outdoor corded thermometers and have been very happy with them. (They type where you run a thin cord out the window for the outdoor temp.) While researching atomic clocks before purchase, I considered a SHARP comparable atomic clock, but after reading reviews, decided to go with BALDR atomic clock. Since I already had success with BALDR indoor/outdoor thermometers, I felt confident about the atomic clock purchase. This BALDR atomic clock has been a fantastic choice for me. Highly recommend and would purchase again; in fact, I may purchase another for a family member gift.

I bought this clock thinking it would be good in my bedroom sitting in a spot that is a little high up. It didn't work because when the clock is placed above one's "straight line of sight", you lose the clarity of the numbers on the clock making it hard to read. I like the clock and it is nice and clear and easy to read provided it sits in a position even with your "line of sight" or a little lower. I decided to keep this clock and placed in on my TV stand shelf and it is working out perfectly. The bright setting is too bright for me so I use the medium setting which is perfect. A computer savvy person could set this up in about 5 minutes - took me a little longer but I got it done! Had to manually set the time but once it was set, no problem. Took a little while for indoor temperature reading to get adjusted but is fine now. Overall I'm satisfied with this clock.

Everything works as it should in setting it up, & the text/numerals are sufficiently large. I only wish the 100% light setting had another 25% more brightness to offer. With the top 2/3 of the clock having a gray background (instead of the black pictured in the product-promoting pictures), extra light for the time numerals would help the contrast a lot. (Compare the all-black background of the product picture to the gray in my picture.)

It's a great looking clock. Fairly easy to set if it doesn't get the signal. I'm a little disappointed in the fact that even though this clock has a slot to be hung on a wall, the visibility of the screen is greatly distorted. Being used on a table or desktop where you view it directly or looking down on it is the best. It can also be viewed pretty good from either side. Trying to hang this clock on the wall at or above any eye level can be done but you will find it very tough to see the screen clearly.

Had I written this review 24 hours ago it would have been less favorable. This is an attractive, color, digital clock with Atomic Time. The readout is large enough to be easily seen and includes the date, day, indoor temperature & humidity, as well as the time. It was the atomic time feature that was my primary reason for selecting this clock. I wanted to save myself some time and energy twice a year when it comes time to adjust for daylight saving time. Right out of the box the atomic time feature didn’t work. The clock just would not find the time signal. I was disappointed. It was easy to set the clock manually, but I wound up setting the clock a few seconds behind the actual time. Close enough! I was going to write a moderately positive review — 3 or 4 stars. Then, a day or two later, I noticed the antenna icon was steadily on — not flashing as it would during a search. When I compared the display time to the time on my iPhone it was accurate, down to the second. I needed to demonstrate some patience in order to learn this clock works!

Where do I start? This clock has a VERY narrow viewing angle. Outside of this viewing angle, you cannot see the information on the screen. When I purchased this clock, I had a specific place in mind where I wanted to hang it, and a spot where I wanted it to be visible from. This clock is essentially invisible with this setup. If you plan on hanging the clock on the wall, it will be lopsided. This is because it only has one nail hole on the back, and the cord hangs off the side. The weight of the cord will cause it to hang crooked on the nail. Newton established this when he published his comprehensive theory on gravity; this is nothing new. To fix this, I had to put a nail in the wall at the bottom of the clock, just below the cord. I will say that the time is spot-on, though. Not that it does me any good, because I have to go up to the clock to be able to read it. When it first set, it was an hour ahead, because apparently, you have to tell it which time zone you’re in. That’s not a big deal, though. Ultimately, this clock is getting returned, because it displays the time just about as well as the empty patch of wall right next to it does. I really wanted to like this clock, because for some reason, all atomic clocks are hideous, and this one is less so than most of the others.

I'm not one to wax euphoric over a clock, but when I quit my cable TV company, I had to return the cable boxes that contained a digital clock, so I needed something to take their places. I chose the BALDR clock. It's easy to set-up, keeps very accurate time, as it possesses a radio-controlled signal from Ft. Collins, CO (if you live in the US). Upon initial set-up, it took several hours for it to begin running accurately (probably something to do with acquiring the signal only at certain times of the day), but since that time, it runs about four seconds ahead of my cellphone time, which is set by my carrier. You can increase or decrease the brightness of the screen. I just keep it on full brightness and don't change it. I can't really speak to the alarm clock aspect of it, as I just use it to keep time. It does have the moon phases on the screen and will tell you the interior temperature and humidity of your home, which are neat functions. Overall, I liked the clock so much I bought two of them. I recommend them.

I bought this because I wanted two things: 1. An atomic clock for my office. I have other clocks, but I want a completely accurate one in easy view. 2. A readout of the current indoor temperature. (I used to always be hot, but now I find myself in my old age being cold rather frequently. I want to know what the real temperature is!) This unit is a very fine way to fill those needs. Its screen is very bright and easily readable. It has three brightness settings, but I only use the brightest one. On the screen, you will find the time in the largest characters. It is labeled am or pm and shows the seconds. It can set to your choice of 12-hour or 24-hour time, and it has several choices of how to handle Daylight Savings Time. Above the seconds display is the phase of the moon. I don't know why that would be useful to me. There is also a small icon that shows up at times to tell you that the unit is trying to connect to the National Bureau of Standards to ge the exact time. My unit, in the middle of an upstairs room about 12 feet from a small window, has a little trouble some days finding the signal, but it connects often enough to match up to my other atomic clocks and watch. The bottom row of figures has the date, day of the week, indoor temperature, and indoor relative humidity along with little arrows to show the trend of the temperature and humidity. (You can figure out the direction time is moving on your own.) The colors--bright white, green, orange, and a mellow blue--are bright and pleasant and provide contrast to help you immediately identify the exact bit of information you are seeking. It has a pull out leg on the back that will allow you to stand the unit on a table or desk. It can also be hung on a wall, but I have not tried that. Power is by AC adapter, which would make hanging in on the wall less desirable. There's a watch-style battery in the unit, which is to retain settings during brief power outages. It has alarm and snooze functions, but I don't use them, so I can't tell you about them. There are a few other features that I don't plan to use, so I can't tell you about them. I've been using the unit for about two weeks. I am very happy with it. It is attractive, accurate, informative, and handy.

Two key reasons for this purchase, the automatic setting of time via atomic clock and a clear view of numbers from my couch. Neither could be accomplished! This despite another such clock (sharp) was on same wall at less than 4 feet from it. As for the display, you MUST be viewing from above the horizontal axis. While seated the screen was very faded and near invisible in a dim room, even though it has a backlight. The display was simply washed out. I returned this clock.

It's an OK Clock The screen is difficult to see in bright daylight, The screen is smooth and shiny and refelctions are difficult to avoid. Excellent for a darker room, like a bedroom
