Thereafter, most of this book is taken up with the naval campaign at Gallipoli (along with peripheral operations in the Levant and in the Suez Canal and Red Sea). The account also covers RN efforts to track down and neutralise the last few remaining German surface raiders [EMDEN, KONIGSBERG, et al]. The narrative is detailed and well written but, despite this being the second edition [which was revised in 1929, when access to German WW1 records was freely available]. the accounts of operations and actions are decidedly 'one-sided', with the few, poor-quality charts provided showing only the tracks of British and Allied warships, not German ones. For the serious student seeking the full picture therefore, it is advisable to refer to Marder ['From the Dreadnought to Scapa Flow], a five-volume set of which is available (in paperback) from desertcart. As with Volume 1, however, the greatest disappointment is the absence of the folio of charts which are provided as 'end-papers' in the bard copy edition. As I suggested in my review of Volume 1, in this digital age and notwithstanding copyright challenges, it would not be beyond the capabilities of Pen & Sword Books to provide these in DVD format, even at extra cost.
