Exceeded Expectations... No Regrets... Update 2024....2026
*** 1-2026*** Still love the thing. ***11-2024 Over a year later, with daily use and still love this thing and have no regrets on this purchase.*** It was getting a little stiff, but a little WD 40 and a wipe down during the last blade change brought it back opening and extending the blade in all positions, like when it was new. In the review below, you will see me mentioning a co-workers knife... the knife I'm referring to above is that one. My other one is like new as well. Original review below... I started a new job in a distribution center and was unhappy with the knives that the company supplied. I had a Milwaukee Fastback, but as the blade opens fully with a flip of the wrist, I didn't think it was appropriate for this workplace. So, I began looking at other utility knives. This DeWalt was retractable like the company supplied knives as well as folding. The price was right and I gave it a shot. When it arrived, I was happy and disappointed. The knife looked great and felt great in my hand. But, there was no blade installed. So, I assumed that the knife had been shipped without blades. So, I ordered DeWalt blades in. In the meantime, I took the blade out of my Milwaukee and installed it in the Dewalt. For some reason, installing a blade the first time was difficult for me. After reading some reviews, it seems others have had the same problem. Once you get past installing the first blade, all is good and gets better. The knife works smoothly and has been comfortable to carry in the front pocket of my Levi's while clipped to the outside of the pocket. So comfortable in fact, that when I first bought the knife, many times I thought I lost it as I didn't realize it was clipped in my pocket. I still regularly bring it home with me because I don't realize it's clipped in my pocket when I put my things in my work locker at night. The best feature of this knife, for how I currently use it in the warehouse I work in, is the first blade setting. It gives you just the tip of the blade to cut tape on sealed boxes. The mechanism to release and close the knife took me a little while to figure out an easy way to close the it. I started out using two hands, then one hand with my leg, but now can easily open and close the knife with one hand. You will find it opens and closes a easier as you use it, but does not get loose. I also did a blade change and had no issues, unlike the first time I tried to install a blade. Now... DON'T BE A BONEHEAD LIKE I WAS.... As I mentioned earlier in the review: I mistakenly thought the knife did not come with blades. I didn't see any blades in the packaging and there wasn't one installed. As my Milwaukee Fastback does not have storage for extra blades, I assumed the DeWalt was the same. When the new blades arrived, that was when I discovered that the knife had actually come with three blades that were stored in the knife body. I did not realize that the black rubber on the top of the body flipped open to access the spare blades. There were no clear instructions on the original packing and I actually watched a Youtube video on how to swap a blade when I was having difficulty installing the first blade, to learn this. I am embarrassed by my stupidity about the blades. But, hopefully my mistake helps others if they make this purchase. I have no regrets at all with this purchase and have recommended it to a co-worker. Unfortunately, my co-worker did not have a positive experience when they ordered this knife in. Their shipment was delayed for several weeks and when the knife finally arrived, it was "loose". The blade holder had side to side play in the handle when locked open. I thought it might be that the handle screws were loose and tried to tighten them for my co-worker with a torx screwdriver. That didn't solve the problem and my co-worker was so frustrated with the delay that they didn't want to bother with doing a return. Since I had referred my co-worker to this knife, I offered him my Milwaukee Fast Back. He tried the Milwaukee, loved it and gave me the DeWalt to use as parts for my knife. I completely disassembled my co-workers Dewalt and couldn't find the problem at first. After taking it apart and putting it together a few times, I saw that the coupling at the blade pivot was too long and wouldn't allow the handle to come together securely against the blade holder when the screw was tightened into the coupling. A few strokes with a file shortened the coupling a few thousandths of an inch and allowed the handle to be tightened properly with the screw. Now, my co-workers former knife has no side play and is as solid as the one I bought. It has also become my knife at work, while the one I bought is for use at home. While I'm happy with both of my knives... No one should have to do what I did to make my co-workers brand new product, fresh out of the packaging, work properly. In the end, if you purchase one of these, and it's "sloppy" when you open it if you are mechanically inclined, disassembly and a few file strokes on the coupling should fix it. Otherwise, exchange it for another one. I have absolutely no regrets on this purchase.

It is just a retractable knife but a solid one...
A very nice utility knife for whatever that is worth to you. It also folds up when not in use and has a clip for easy carry on your trousers or a belt. There is storage for 3 blades not including the blade in use. Mine actually came with two extras so I imagine yours will as well. My only issue, if you can even call it an issue, is the packaging. I am a fairly intelligent dude but it took me a second to figure out what I had to do to get the packaging off. I don't know if it is a poorly thought out idea or the instructions need to be improved but basically, it gives you arrows and not so clear directions. It has been awhile so I sadly can't recall how to make the directions clearer. What I can tell you, that some may not realize is---A) right where the belt clip attaches to the knife, underneath is where you will find the part you have to release if you want to fold the knife back up. B) Also, the big black portion on the handle lifts up to reveal storage space. You release it with a black 'knob' at the back of the product, also on the bottom. Just pull it back a little while pushing toward the top and you will see how it works. C) Installing a blade is done using a black button on the left front of the knife. You move the retractable toggle all the way forward, push down said button, then insert blade. It will go in more than half way, release the button, and the toggle will retract the blade. Much of this may be intuitive to others but I was thoroughly confused the day I received this knife so maybe what I shared here will help you. Overall, a solid product from Dewalt. Granted it is just a utility knife but the others I have do not fold and I specifically remember one that needs to be taken apart for a blade change while this one takes seconds.

Great box cutter
I love this knife. Many box cutters and knives are too brittle and the blades eventually break. In this one the blades are protected and all works well.

Blades **UPDATE** DO Retract All the Way
The Dewalt DWHT10035L Folding Retractable Utility Knife is of some of the highest quality utility knives I have had the opportunity to use. One thing I didn't see in the description or in the reviews is that this knife actually comes with 5 blades. I would have liked to know that before purchasing blades with it. It's easy to open and close and I'm sure after I get the hang of it, I'll be able to open it with one hand when needed. The blade storage compartment is easy to open and access when needed. The only flaw in my opinion is that the blade does not retract all the way. There's always a small point of a blade sticking out and I see this as a hazard more than anything. If other customers who bought this knife don't have this problem then I must have a lemon. **UPDATE** ________________________ After the comment below, I put on a pair of work gloves to try to get the blade all the way in without cutting myself, and much to my surprise I was not inserting the blade far enough into the hole so that it fully retracts all the way. I'll still take a star for the amount of wrestling I had to do in order to install the blade correctly, but this is still a very high quality utility knife, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for one that will last.

Well designed
I am not a contractor. I have bought this knife to open shipment boxes. This review is based on initial impression. The price will buy you 10 cheap box cutters that feel really cheap, unsafe and inconvenient. This knife is much better than that, and it comes with 3 double blades The knife is compact and sits well in my (smaller) hand. My thumb is right over the lever that retracts the blade, and tip of my thumb is on the rubber area. I can easily retract the blade to any length (3 positions) with no effort. It seems to stay firm in position. The knife opens with no effort, and folds with light pressure on the internal spring. Once opened, it is held open with a spring latch - seems pretty secure. I have inserted a blade in 15 seconds. This was the first time I own a contractor grade knife, so this was VERY easy. I have also tried removing the blade, and it is also quite easy, just press a button, and the blade can be pulled out with no effort. I liked that the blade, when hidden, is still available in a little hook to be used as rope/wire cutter. It is hard for me to judge if it would be easy to remove the remainder of the blade (if it breaks). But hypothetically if there is any part of it protruding, using twitzers should work just fine. On the other hand, if nothing protrudes, you MAY be able to still remove the blade by accessing it through the rope hook or just hitting the knife against a hard surface while pressing the blade release button - the blade should go out. Otherwise it is probably not easy to disassemble the blade holder. The knife is actually quite pretty, and resembles a shark when open. Yellow/black color makes it hard to misplace. And of course it cuts boxes and wraps really well. Is it ready for a tough job? well, probably not poking at granite tiles - the blade could be brittle, although not that much if extended 1/3 of the way. The knife itself feels solid Generally I find the knife quite nicely designed, and well made, although I do not have much comparison. An overkill for my needs. For $10 I can certainly afford it, and replace in the unlikely event if breaks. By the way, it has a lifetime warranty

Can't go wrong
I'm a construction contractor and we use utility knives every day. Every so often a few get lost and it's time for an upgrade. I think I have used them all at one point or another. The DeWalt is the finest one I have seen so far. Unless you want something more beautiful than function then this is for you too. Pocket knife style utility knives are a little more elegant, but the DeWalt is the one you need on the job site. When I ordered this I also ordered the Kobalt equivalent, I wasn't sure which one I would prefer, but the package has arrived. The Kobalt is top heavy on balance, too long, too wide.. the handle feels like cheap plastic. I am sorely disappointed. I do like the finger well, and locking mechanism, but from Kobalt I really expect more. However, this DeWalt has rubberized grips, metal handle, adjustable angle, storage for extra blades, retractable, quick change blades, string cutter, and a very sturdy belt clip. If anything ever comes loose, it would be easy to tighten and adjust. Another feature I love is that when the knife is closed there is no wasted space, it is very compact for having every feature under the sun. Impressive. If I could send my wish list to DeWalt I would ask them to make the knife completely metal as the part that holds the blade is plastic, it will scratch and scar over time but will not effect the use, and it could be a half an inch less thick, but give it 10 more years.. In conclusion, I can't say enough good things about this knife. I'm in love, but can I play devil's advocate for just one moment? Do you see the small workpro know in the picture also? It's only 3" long, less than half an inch wide, has a quick change blades, locks when open. It isn't just cheap junk either. This is really what's is needed, something so small you forget you have it, but you never have to be without it, and sturdy enough for any project.. If they could find a spot for one extra blade I think they could put DeWalt and Kobalt out of business.

Worst utility knife I've ever had
First of all, my knife was shipped to me defective which I unfortunately didn't notice before opening the package. The black thumb grip that's supposed to be at the top, filling the slot between the release button and the slider, is completely missing. It's one thing to manufacture a substandard product, and another thing to ship defective units of that product as well. In addition, the knife doesn't even function a little bit. DeWalt has a reputable name and I trusted their brand, so I didn't feel the need to spend hours on research for new utility knife. I wish I did, because now I've spent hours online figuring out how to load it's very first blade only to discover this is a common problem buyers have with it. The blade pictured is just sitting in the slot, able to fall out if I turn the knife upside down, and after relentless tries and putting dangerous amounts of simultaneous pressure on the release button and on the blade, that remains the furthest the blade will sit in the knife. As far as I can tell, the release button is entirely non-functional. This is all even after watching their tutorial and ensuring the slider is all the way up. Even if it the release button did work, it is still a bad design for being so, so small and difficult to press. On top of all of this, DeWalt will not issue a refund or accept a return for this product for any reason. That lifetime warranty would only come in handy if I wanted them to ship me a second piece of trash that I'd need to immediately put into the garbage can. When DeWalt does a product right, they do it RIGHT, and when they do it wrong, holy crap do they do it WRONG. Make sure you're buying one of the products they know how to make. Do your research.

Five Stars (update: still five stars)
Easy to open deliberately, difficult to open accidentally. Very safe. Storage in the handle for extra blades. Very satisfied. UPDATE APRIL 2018: Y'know what, seven months later, I don't think I said enough nice things about this knife, so here's some more. I bought this to replace an otherwise perfectly serviceable utility knife that was a bit... eager, if you know what I mean, especially when I was going up ladders. I wanted something that wasn't gonna surprise my thigh with a friendly slash, so I went for one that required two very deliberate actions to open. Well, it opens, it extends, it cuts, it retracts, and it closes, and nothing's lost tension or started to get squiffy yet, so job's a good 'un. My finger rests nicely parallel with the blade on a wee surface with grippy knobs, without the retraction lever getting in the way, which means cutting with this thing is as easy as sliding my index finger down the thing I want to cut. When folded up, it's small enough to fit in a pointlessly-tiny compartment of my overstuffed toolbox. It's solid, heavy enough to not feel cheap, light enough that I don't begrudge its weight when picking up my toolbox. It's bright yellow, so it's hard to lose. I haven't even managed to chip the paint, and I'm not gentle. To replace the blade, press the black button at the end of the knife and pull on a part of the blade that isn't sharp. I'm racking my brains trying to think of an improvement that could be made to this thing, and I really can't. Nice work, Dewalt. (aha - last-second before I hit the submit button - swap the colours. Have the silver part yellow, and the yellow part silver - that makes the knife more visible when it's open. People who buy two-action utility knives like this are thinking of safety, and a bright yellow thing in the corner of their eye will remind them to close the blade.)
