Throughout the long history of Japan's martial traditions, judo has evolved into one of the nation's richest and most revered cultural legacies. The vast array of judo techniques has branched out into three distinct categories: throwing techniques, grappling techniques, and striking techniques. Of these, throwing techniques (nage-waza) represent some of the most dynamic and compelling aspects of this world-famous martial art. Recent developments in competition (shiai) and free practice (randori) have seen an increase in the number of forms of nage-waza, leading to often confusing interpretations of the techniques' names. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive and correct classification of nage-waza terminology as used in both competition and practice. All the sixty-seven official Kodokan throwing techniques and their various forms are explained thoroughly and concisely, and over 1,800 photographs accompany the text to provide the reader with the most comprehensive guide to judo's throwing forms to date. For many years author Toshiro Daigo has held the prestigious position of chief instructor at the Kodokan, regarded as the mecca for all judo enthusiasts, and this book is the result of painstaking research into the constantly changing forms of judo's nage-waza. It will be an invaluable resource for practitioners everywhere. Review: Love this judo book - Love this judo book, I bought myself a 2nd once i seen that it came back into print again. This goes with me to class every week. I love the detail and the number of variations it throws in for the throwing techniques. This is not however a comprehensive book and will not provide any ground work or kata. This is just Here is Tai Otoshi, Here is the first way, then it will go through key points and some variations. The problem I have with this book as they dont always have pictures lining up with the descriptions and not as many pictures as you would like. So if you are hoping for a picture to sell the throw you will not get that for a lot of the variations. There will be like 1 or 2 per description for most. The descriptions are very details and thorough however can be somewhat confusing at times. It works well to take them step by step with someone. This is a book for students and instructors, I would say mid level judoka and up. I would say it is a good book for beginners but there are better for beginners then this. If you are needing details and variation this will do it for you. If you are looking for easy laid out descriptions that pair with pictures for each step of the way, this is not the book to start with. I highly recommend this book but caution those new to the sport as this was not my go to until I got past sankyu. Review: Hardcover and lots of pictures - I purchase this book for my daughter who is taking Judo lessons again. Her instructor is letting her help teaching the little kids. This book is helping her a lot. Hardcovers have better pictures too. Aloha

Very detailed. Good to review some of the techniques that are not so mainstream as well as ones that are.

Kodokan Judo Throwing Techniques...
This book is probably the most detailed I've read on Nage-Waza. As with all of the Kodansha publications, the quality is top notch also. Now, I'm not a judoka, I actually train in the Bujinkan and submission wrestling. I wanted a concise volume of throws as a go-to for minute details. Judo throws are applicable to many arts as they rely on principles instead of style... by that, I mean a hip throw will generally be similar from style to style, with variations being gi, no gi, weapons etc. This book addresses each throw from multiple set ups and includes all variations as accepted by the Kodokan, and importantly (I believe) covers the 'lineage' of most of the techniques from koryu budo, to Kodokan Judo.

Great book, a must for the judoka
This book covers all 67 categories of throws in nage waza (standing techniques). Each category presents the basic, cannonical, throw plus a series of variations on it and considerations to take into account. Some even include references to older jujitsu techniques. Photographs are in black and white, but they are clear and the sequence presented is relevant; you get to see the meaningful intermediate steps. I bought it used and a little over twice its original value (the book seems to be out of print at this time, Jan. 2014), but i feel is money well invested. Summarizing, this is a great book and I strongly recommend it to the serious Judo practicioner or instructor.

Two words: Buy it!
Reading the other reviews here of Daigo Kudan's work, now released in English by Kodansha, it is very difficult to add to the words of praise for this monumental collection of Kodokan Judo nagewaza. Originally this material was published in a series of Kodokan magazine articles. In fact, the two models for principal photography worked with the author and publisher for eight years. Kodansha Int'l deserves praise for its commitment to bringing judo books like "Kodokan Throwing Techniques" to students outside of Japan. Most recently, a reprint and updated translation of the coveted Mifune Judan's "The Canon of Judo" was also released, and it is hard to say which book I like best. Both will raise the level of the reader's understanding of the technical and philosophical foundations of Kodokan Judo. I also recommend this book to those who are involved with other martial arts/sports, including "Brazilian Jujitsu" and "Mixed Martials Arts." A thorough study can only increase their expertise, and they may be surprised to discover that there are few things that are really "new" under the sun.
