How large are the individual pieces?

One and a half to two inches. My grandkids use them for making creations with hot glue guns. I have purchased three bags since last July!

What hardwood tree are they made from?

I have this bag of wood pieces, many many pieces as I use them as wood stamps on bird house so I glue them on and burn them with a propane torch. They are not hard wood, yet all made from pine. To me it was well worth the price as I don't think I will ever run short of pieces for quite some time.
