Q: Is there a mono mode so I can wear just one earbud at a time and still make calls? No the usual "right is only for calls and left is the slave earbud"

The only earbuds that allow what you are talking about are the Samsung iconx which is what I resorted to after trying out the jabra earbuds. I triple my time by using one earbud at a time by simply switching them out. When the left one goes dead I switch to the right one while the left is charging and vise vera. Jabra doesnt allow me to make either bud the master.

Q: I must be stupid, but I don't understand the battery life. 5 hours, 15 with charge case. You have to remove these from the charge case to use them?

The earphones themselves have a battery that lasts 5 hours. So you can use them listening to music or making calls for 5 hours. To recharge the headphones you put them into the case, after a few minutes in the case they will be recharged. The case itself has a battery to do this so you can recharge without plugging the case into the wall. The case battery lasts 15 hours and will recharge the earbuds 2 times before needing to be plugged into an outlet.
