Best Made Belt, Immediate Relief, Improves Hip Strength (get the NEW version)
After trying a few, this is the most comfortable, best made, and least ugly belt of the bunch. It is absolutely enabling me to recover and strengthen. Made by a chiropractor who has iterated on the design for a couple decades. This belt is more flexible that the standard disposable white belts,, works in water and during workouts. I play competitive squash and wear it under my skirt. I wear it outside of clothes or inside...it works either way for me. HOW TO WEAR: Short video on how to place the belt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIdOLp5ByWU Initially I was wearing it a bit too high. You bend your knee up and the belt should sit level with the start of your thigh. INSTANT RELIEF: I have spinal stenosis, unstable pelvis, and pain radiating down my leg. The pain kept me from walking. This belt immediately made activity possible again. Working with chiro and spine docs, I'll be wearing it 3 weeks, and then I might just wear it during really tough match play. RESEARCH - STABALIZES JOINT SO YOU CAN IMPROVE HIP STRENGTH: A Si belt is different from belts that take over muscle duty- it supports the hips like an external ligament so the joint stabalizes and the muscles can work better. That means more movement and rehab! Video on the theory of the belt: Serola Belt Benefits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1Jk8YzGEpM ----------------------------------------- Here is some research by Precision Biomechanics detailing how the belt helps improve strength. (google Case Study: Sacral Belt Improves Hip Stability during Running) http://www.precisionbiomechanics.com.au/#!Case-Study-Sacral-Belt-Improves-Hip-Stability-during-Running/c18si/879ACB32-62FA-430D-9E2E-B92875E0C258 The spine is connected to the pelvis via the sacroiliac joints. Any loads transferred from the lower limbs to the spine must pass through these joints therefore joint dysfunction can cause significant pain especially during dynamic activities such as running. Despite their frequent use, very little scientific evidence exists documenting the effectiveness of sacral belts during running. Studies have confirmed their ability to reduce load in the sacroiliac joint tendons and ligaments (Sichting et al. 2014), and to engage hip stabilising muscles during supine leg raise activities (Park et al. 2010), but to our knowledge no study has assessed their effect on running kinematics. Here at Precision Biomechanics we provide perhaps some of the first quantitative evidence for the efficacy of sacral belts at improving hip stability during running. An athlete experiencing feelings of subjective pelvic instability whilst running recently visited Precision Biomechanics. Below is a series of graphs illustrating her hip function whilst running both with and without a sacral belt. When running without the belt (left graphs) large asymmetries were observed in her peak hip collapse and peak pelvis drop, with motion increased and decreased on her right and left sides respectively compared to our database of runners. When wearing the belt (right graphs) significant improvements were observed; peak hip collapse and peak pelvis drop on the left and right sides became symmetrical. Given where the belt sits around the pelvis, it is unlikely that the belt ‘holds’ the runners hips in place or takes over the role of the hip stabilising muscles. Instead, it is more likely that the belt provides proprioceptive feedback prompting the runner to switch on her stabilising muscles. The belt may therefore be a very useful training tool for improving hip strength.

Great for pregnancy
I bought the Serola after trying a few knockoff cheap brands in previous pregnancies and being unsatisfied. This time my pelvic floor PT said she recommended the brand name Serola because it was worth it, so I gave it a shot since I really wanted to avoid the severe symphasis pubis inflammation I’d experienced before. Apparently the trick is to never let the pain get that bad in the first place if you I can help it. So I started wearing it at fifteen weeks pregnant and have been using it for two weeks now. At first I found the belt very uncomfortable, but once I learned to wear it correctly I’ve been delighted. It’s not bulky at all and is easily hidden under dresses and flowy tops, and I find it very adjustable for however much compression I need. I haven’t had any issues with the belt moving, it stays in place really well. I can do weightlifting workouts without comprising my form and even go on family walks for two hours at a time without that excruciating low back and symphasis pain. Combined with doing my stabilization exercises, and icing painful areas after exertion, I think this thing could really help get me through staying active while managing pelvic girdle pain for the remainder of the pregnancy.

New Serola Sacroiliac Belt, Medium hip 34-40"
This review is for the New Serola Sacroiliac Belt, Medium hip 34-40" submitted by a 40something female who has suffered 20 years of debilitating pain from a pesky SI joint that just simply will not stay put. Regardless of how I go about my day, such as sitting for long hours or standing and walking instead, I suffer. Regardless of the amount of exercise, stretching, regular massage and chiropractic care to keep my scoliosis and sacrum in check, I suffer. I refuse to go the surgery route until I have exhausted all options. I have had a particularly bad and disheartening month with this pain, and I decided to try to see if youtube had a little advice. Sigh, enter the Serola belt. Has it is come to this? Yes. Yes, it has. I was as skeptical as I was desperate. I ordered it, received it very quickly, and within about 15 minutes of wearing it, I felt support, stability and significant pain relief. I haven’t felt this stable since I was a kid. I would liken this newfound stability to the kind of pain relief and stability one feels when wearing a removable cast for a bad ankle sprain. Immobilizing a hypermobile/injured part of my body was the key to my pain relief. For the past three days, I can feel micro-alignments in my back and SI joint, I can work in the garden, I can lift heavy stuff again, sit for the hours I need to in order to work, and drive without feeling that telltale twinge in my back as it pops out of alignment. I will use this belt as a tool to exercise more aggressively for the coming months. I know I'll see results. I’m so grateful that I don’t have to keep stressing out my liver with anti-inflammatories just to get through my every waking moment. The Serola belt has also helped me sleep better for three nights. In short, I am beside myself with joy that I found such a simple yet effective tool to help me regain my health. My only regret is that I had to discover this from the bloody internet rather than from any one of the health care specialists who’ve taken my money for 20 years and never mentioned that I might need to try something to help stabilize myself. While this is NO substitute for strengthening, stretching and other preventative measures, I am already certain that the Serola belt is the missing piece of the puzzle for me. I can tell with continued use in addition to my self-care, my condition is going to significantly improve. And I am sure my bank account will too. Sheeesh. I’ll do my best to update this review in a month. Good luck to the rest of you out there!

A Doctor's personal opinion
I agree with other reviewers about the positive benefits of this belt. I've had SI joint problems for about 2 years (enough to take a.m. ibuprofen for) but lately I developed pain in both SI joints (left and right) all the time, bothersome enough to need to take maximal doses of Aleve and Tylenol several times per day. As soon as I started to wear the belt, this greatly improved. When I began also to wear it at night, though, the pain REALLY improved A LOT more. One thing I think that other reviewers have NOT emphasized though is that when you start to wear this belt, it takes a while to figure out the optimal place to wear it on your body and how to KEEP it there. It works best when it is worn much lower than the typical lumbar belt. The lower edge of the belt in front should be about the level of the symphysis pubis (where the pubic bones meet in the front of the pelvis) and in the back, the bottom of the belt should be about the level of the coccyx (tailbone). The elastic side belts should be applied via the velcro attachments quite snugly, worn as high or even a bit higher than the main belt (I wear them overlapping the main belt by ~ 50%). The problem is that when one sits down, (for me at least, but I am quite thin) the whole belt tends to ride up in the back until it is in the position of the typical lumbar belt (directly overlying the lumbar area of the back) where it really doesn't stabilize the SI joint much. If you work a lot of the day in a sitting position, and don't adjust the belt so this doesn't happen, you won't get the full benefit of the belt. The answer to this problem seems to be to re-apply the belt even lower in the back before one sits down for an extended period. When you sit down, the belt will then not ride up your back as much. Having said that, my problem may be specific to my body type, and each wearer will eventually need to work out their own way to apply this belt best. This may require a lot of trips to the restroom the first week while you are figuring out how best to adjust the belt. Never mind. Just put it on and keep re-applying it as much as you need to, whenever you change positions during the first weeks that you wear it, in order to get and keep comfortable. You'll figure it out quickly (you'll know if it's not in the right place if the pain does not improve or starts to come back). If you really have SI joint problems (not slipped or ruptured disc pressing on spinal nerves, for which in my opinion this seems NOT likely to be helpful) this belt will help your pain. You may still have to do Physical Therapy or other treatments. But this is a very good first step and may help you avoid having to ask your doctor to start narcotic pain relievers (which you should by all means avoid if you possibly can, as long as you can, since getting off them will be much harder than getting on them). I am ordering my second belt tonight (as others have noted, I don't want to be without one while the current one is being washed). I really strongly recommend this belt. I have no financial conflict of interest.

Relief from discomfort is not all that.
Good quality but overpriced. Also, see a physician to be sure your issue is the SI joint.

Wonderful thing!
I took this belt with free delivery to The Netherlands and of course I'm happy with this. But if you have a convex buttocks - it's a bit problem to fix the belt on a right position. But any way belt is quite convenient and really fixes sacroiliac joint! People wrote here that can sleep with it but I took it off during the sleep and for me is more convenient to wear it through the day and I feel effect even just of it.

Can walk for an hour without pain!
Love it! Works perfectly, comfortable, hides under my clothing, was worried about it slipping but as long as you wear it correctly it stays without sliding around. with this belt and my stretching plan I can happily walk the dog for an hour without pain!

Really great for pain relief
Following an injury to my right hip nearly two years ago, my left hip became incredibly painful as, try as I might not to overload the uninjured side, it’s inevitable. My pelvis keeps tilting due to posture adjustment and stresses the sacroiliac joint causing an immense amount of pain. I wasn’t even able to sleep properly. After repeated visits to the osteopath and a large amount of money spent, I found these. This belt supports my pelvis and enables me to sit, walk, stand and most importantly for my mental health, continue with my physio and some of my fitness regime. On a bad day, I even wear it to sleep. It’s easy to fit and there are innumerable Youtube videos if you’re having trouble. I don’t always have it at the same tension, sometimes I need more support than others. I did consider the cheaper options available but decided in the bigger scheme of things, my health was worth the extra cost and went for the product that is recommended by professionals. I now have two of these so I always have a clean one. I’ve had these three months now and these things have made life tolerable whilst I wait for treatment on the other hip. The Velcro is incredibly strong and is still showing no signs of wear and tear. When washing, I have the belt loosely done up so all the Velcro is connected, put it in a washing bag so it doesn’t come into contact with anything else and wash without fabric softener. This is easy for me as I never wash any of my gym clothing with fabric softener as I find that fabric softener seems to hold the sweat smell in. All in all, I highly recommend these. If you are in pain, it's worth every penny.
