No. The cover is see through which is why you can see the apple logo in these photos. I have the black one, and the logo is still able to be seen through the cover.

Does the case wear out hinges?

I would say the case can remain on the laptop. It's a clear case. When I went on the airplane I previously had a red laptop case and I never had to remove the case. I always put the laptop and the case in a separate bin with all electronics, which is the standard procedure at airports.
