Why are all the reviews and ratings for a 24hr mechanical timer, not a short cycle repeat timer? The instruction to set night mode makes no sense.

I have this device over a year, is great!. The day/night instruction is confusing, I just make my own markings on the device and count the hours i want it to be on.

Does this have a battery backup for memory does it need one for memory?

It must have a battery for memory backup as it retains programming over winter while not plugged in.

is it able to set the on/off time down to just one or two seconds? I notice there's space between 5s and off, just wondering

I'm not sure, I know you can do 5 minutes.
