Seriously, before Resident Evil 7, I was never into the franchise. 7 got me hooked and I grew attached to the intricate story. Village continued it as perfectly as I’d hoped. I bought my copy for the PS4 slim and it ran beautifully. Posting the review here to carry the good praise for the game and to show even old consoles (slowly being replaced) still have relevance if you have one. By the way, if you’re one of those people who say 7 killed the franchise, then you’ll hate this game. However, if you like first-person horror games that have been made with love and attention, you’ll enjoy it. Oh, and I won’t spoil the story but I may harp on the game mechanics. Combat: Really good for the type of game you’re buying. No, it’s not a first-person shooter and it never was trying to be. The gun mechanics work just fine and moving while aiming works pretty well. It should be mentioned you still have the typical Resident Evil bullet spongy enemies, but that’s not a detractor when the franchise is built on that mechanic. The guns sound great with an amazing touch to audio detail. On occasion, I ran into a boss that gave me some trouble but nothing I couldn’t figure out how to work through. Don’t worry about Dark Souls difficulty. Probably the closest thing I’ve had to that was getting swarmed by about fifteen enemies all at once with barely anytime to reload. Nothing a grenade thrown at my feet can’t solve! I can’t think of any major complaints here. Map design and detail: For me, the past several Resident Evil games shine bright with an over-the-top touch with detail. That’s no con at all! Really these games are pleasing just to walk around and look at. You’ll see tiny little additions like subtle drips of moisture running down a mirror or small flecks of rust dropping to the ground. The overall intricate and well-crafted levels were perfect. Always enjoy the several puzzles littered throughout the map with various keys scattered about. I’m a puzzle box fan so I enjoy the process of solving this sort of stuff. Again no real complaints aside from missing an item here and there. Upgrades: The upgrades that can be found to go with the various weapons also add a nice flare to combat. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall a shop system in 7. In the said shop, you can purchase ammo (albeit expensive), sell loot you found, buy upgrades, or have the Duke (trader) cook you food acting as permanent health upgrades. Having the shop greatly encourages selling items to do more upgrades on weapons. You will definitely be using more ammo sooner than you think if you don’t increase weapon damage. Ammo isn’t by any means a rarity, but it comes and goes in frequency. Side note, the Duke is the kindest most helpful character in the whole game! If you buy, you’ll see what I mean. This is by no means a con for other characters (considering they’re supposed to be attempting to kill you at every waking moment). Still no major complaints. Story: In the beginning, I was a little unsure if I’d made a good decision to buy early. I already didn’t like where it was taking me, but it does get better… constantly! For the first few hours, you’re in continual suspense and dread. Every sound could potentially mean danger and you’re always on edge. That to me marks a true horror game. You know at some point a jump scare or other scare will come. But when everything sounds like the beginning of said scare, you can never truly predict when and where it will happen. You never get bored of this at least in my experience. I have to say, the story (after understanding from beginning to end) was a good continuation of 7. Please note, it isn’t 7. That’s odd to say but some people went into this game hoping for more 7 and were disappointed. This is an entirely different play through. Yes, it continues from 7; however, it’s not a DLC or addition to 7. Therefore, don’t buy it hoping a big vampire lady is going to be Jack for the whole game. If that’s the whole point in buying for you, then buy something else because you won’t get that. That being said, it is a good standalone continuation and the story closely follows 7. The one complaint I have is wanting more time dedicated to certain characters (I won’t be specific to prevent spoilers but it honestly is no big problem. There’s still plenty of time to enjoy said characters just wanted more.) Oh and I might have handled situations differently in the story. Then again everyone would. But this is a horror game not a choose you’re own adventure so I can’t really complain. Acting: There are some parts and scenes where I believe voice acting could’ve been better. Though, I’m no actor myself so you could say I’m an impartial judge. Otherwise, acting, motion capture, etc.. were done really well. Conclusion: Is it worth $60, absolutely! Would I buy it for cheaper? Of course but a pre-ordered it so I don’t get the luxury. After stating everything, would I buy it again? Yes, probably on a newer console but it still looks amazing on PS4 slim. Would I recommend it to someone else? 100%! What’s my rating on a scale of 1-10? 9/10. I’ll probably replay it in a few years and enjoy it all over again. Hope this review helped your choice to buy it.
