Vic Firth Jazz Brush – plastic handle

My favorite brushes. My last ones developed a leak of oil or whatever is on the inside. That made a huge mess that was really hard to clean. So I worry a bit, but these are doing great for now. They don't get bent like cheaper brushes. They glide in and out well (probably due to the oil that leaked on the old ones)

I bought these for my son who normally uses sticks only. At first, he didn't care for them, but the more he used them, and learned how to manipulate them, the more he has enjoyed using them. As a Christian artist, the softer sounds are necessary, but the best part is how you can extend them all the way, or only partially. Different levels of extension create different sounds so it's actually like having several pairs of sticks in one. I can't say enough good things about them. They're not "cheap" either. Construction is important in tools like this and these didn't let us down. For instance, if you extend them halfway, a quarter of the way... whatever... they stay there. I've seen some extendables that will slide farther out as you play, but not these. We are very content.

Son needed them for jazz band. He has another set of brushes but they require more finagling to pop the brushes out & retract them because they do not have the handy loop that these ones have. Do yourself a favor & just spend the extra money & get these! The loop is worth it. Saves time & also keeps you from accidentally bending the wires by pulling them out with your hands. All brushes run the risk of getting a little bent, but if played correctly & put away with care, these should last a long time. Much longer than sticks anyway!

How do you rate a pair of jazz brushes? Seems simple enough. Anyhoo, I'm a beginning drummer (34-years-old) but these brushes are fantastic. Excellent sound quality, durability, I couldn't be happier.

Heavier weight than most. Traditional retractable brushes. I like them a lot.

Plastic handle is ok, not the most comfortable, however it allows for rim shots for samba and bossa. Being a medium gauge, double stroke patters work really well, and effective in jazz gallop pattern. Good alternative to have on the side!
