Q: How can you take a picture if you are not close enough to push the camera button?

If you have an Apple Watch it has a camera remote. I use this to take pictures from far away.

Q: It looks like it turns left or right for sideways movement, which is great. But will it adjust for upward/downwards movements?

No it does not. It rotates around left to right and all the way around but it can only be adjusted up and down manually.

Q: How deep are the grips that hold the phone? i have an iphone pro max with the popsocket, so it needs to be at least 3/4" to keep phone in the case.

I always have to take mine phone out of its case to put it into the grips. The grips are shallow.
