Can this light handle a 10440 battery

No, this flashlight is only suitable for standard AAA 1.5V battery. Batteries above 1.5V will damage the chip.

The hero images state to 'not use lithium batteries' but there is nothing mentioned in the Product Info on why. Is there an issue using rechargeables?

No issue with rechargeable. They are warning you not to use the 3.7 volt lithium-ion batteries (which are same size and appearance as standard alkaline batteries but much more powerful). Use of 3.7 volt would damage a light designed for 1.5 volts.
