could the adhesive possibly ruin wood?

I think it would be dependent on what kind of wood it was and the wood finish. But it seems like a mild adhesive. I was able to use it under the desk so the cable management is not visible at all. I would suggest doing that if you are concerned about damaging the wood surface.

Can i cut this to make shorter?

It’s a pretty thick plastic, so I don’t think you could with regular scissors. If you had a small saw then yes you would be able to cut it.
