How do you secure it to view vertically besides horizontally? I don’t see how the insert spins as one review stated.

It does not spin, just sits up horizon. To have it sit up vertically you would have to lay it against something. My Ipad tablet holder spins, but not this universal. Sorry, if the ad does not say it spins, then it does not spin.

Will it protect !my tablet if I drop it?

As all cases go, it depends on how it's dropped. So far, ours has fallen from a high of about 2.5 ft and survived.
