Works great on salt and pepper hair!
Very happy with this product! Works as advertised. My hair is about 40% gray and my natural hair color is dark brown. It did a nice job of toning the gray down a bit without looking fake or dyed. I was a little concerned the product would be too heavy and gloppy, but you can cut it with a little bit of water to get the right consistency. It's not too shiny and holds my hair in place without looking greasy. I did not encounter any staining issues. It is water based so I don't know if I'd want to stand in the rain wearing this stuff. Overall, I found this to be a great alternative to hair dye, as well as a really good pomade. One plus, if you don't like the color, just wash it out.

Black tinted pomade gel!
I've always been interested in black pomades. They provide the potential for people like me with black hair to get some nice luster. Normally, the issue arises from wax-heavy oil-based pomades because they tend to dull out dark-colored hair. Using a black beeswax pomade in its place will remove this problem, but with a gel-like water-based pomade? They don't share this issue -- that is unless the pomade flakes. And if it flakes, then there's already a greater set of issues with that pomade. It was an interesting choice by Imperial to try for this pomade. But...it's solving a problem that doesn't exist and with a pomade that can be hardly called a solution. Design Blacktop Pomade is a variation on the current design of the other Imperial products. The only exception here is a black plastic lid to replace the silver one and a black background on the label. I guess it's befitting for this as a black water-based pomade. Scent I don't like the scent. I can bear the Cool Grease fruitiness, but this level is ridiculous. It smells like an exaggerated artificial watermelon-flavored bubble gum. It sweet and fruity, but there's a strange bite that is plasticky-fake. Consistency This products feels just like the Classic Pomade and little different from Suavecito Firme and Layrite Super Hold. Application Surprisingly, it applies very easily. Significantly better than the Classic Pomade. Shine No shine. Matte. Slickness Not slick at all. Your hairs can start straying right away, which is what happened to me. You can see this in the pictures. This lack of slickness will make it difficult to style a solid pompadour with because things just won't catch each other and stay put. Strength Weird, but the hold is also less than what I remembered with the Classic Pomade. This one measures out to be more like a medium. Control It's poor -- pretty damn poor. Endurance Due to the lack of slickness, the pompadour just falls apart. No matter how you style your hair, you'll have a few splits or weak points. This is where your pomp will start falling apart, and this lack of slickness won't help at all. Restyleability Not possible. Barely able to even with water. Hardness Dry as hard as you'll ever experience. Rinseability Washes no problem, at least. My Conclusion: The lack of slickness kills anything this pomade would've been good for. You can argue that maybe Blacktop would be useful for a loose pompadour, but styling one of those with a gel-like pomade...it's like putting diesel into a Ford Focus. I would not recommend this pomade.

Great Product but cost has increased TOO much
Love this product but the price has gone up too much for me to purchase again. I will try a different product. Product went from $14 to $24 dollars, I can buy at my local barbershop for $20. More on the product, provides great hold and looks very well. Doesn't make your hair too stiff while still providing great control. Product 5 Stars Price 1 Star

Poor pomade that looks like a cheap dye job
If you're looking to use this to darken your hair and avoid dye, forget it. At its darkest it looks like a bad dye job - your hair looks blacker but lifeless and dull. I didn't have any problem with it rubbing off, but it did fade so that by lunch I couldn't see much difference between my blackened grey hair and my usual grey hair. The other main problem is that it stinks - BAD. And it lingers more than most pomades I have used. It smells like a cat died in a mechanic's garage. As far as hold goes, it does hold hair in place but it is not a strong hold - probably more of a light to medium type. I can't recommend this pomade.

While I'm not graying too bad yet, it would still be noticeable if all ...
I was worried when I first bought this that it would be obvious that I had something in my hair to cover up my grays. While I'm not graying too bad yet, it would still be noticeable if all of a sudden my hair was jet black all over. My worries were not alleviated when I opened the lid and it looked like a jar of tar. Once I put it on, I realized that this stuff was amazing and that it made me look less gray while not changing the color of my hair and giving me a nice sleek but not greasy look. I've used Imperial products in the past and they are all great but this is definitely the best for my hair type.

Best pomade my husband has ever used... and I steal it for slick pony tails and adding texture to messy waves. Be aware that it's black... so don't think it would work on lighter hair.. but for dark hair its amazing!
