How is this different from just using electrical tape and or gaffers tape?

All the replies seem to be contrasting this with electrical tape, without any comments on gaff tape. Unlike either this or electrical tape, gaff tape is made with a cloth backing. That and the adhesive used makes gaff tape different from most other tapes. The myriad uses for gaff tape can be found searching the web.

This tape lacks adhesive and is made from silicone, and as others have mentioned, it adheres to itself. Either type of tape can be used to wrap the grip of various items: tools, weight-lifting bars, etc. Though this tape is marketed specifically for this purpose, if you don't want a rubber feel and would rather a cloth texture, then gaff tape would work fine.

Also, to be more specific about how this differs from electrical tape, beyond the fact that electrical tape has adhesive while this does not, there are two other important differences. This is made of silicone, while electrical tape is typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and quality electrical tape will carry a UL certification — this part is important to ensure that it can handle the exposure to the elements, including voltage, without being a fire hazard.

These are three different types of tape, made from different materials with different applications intended. I've used both this type as well as gaff tape to wrap my grips (never electrical), but I would not consider them interchangeable if you want a specific feel or need to meet requirements. Use the right tool for the job.

Does it lose its “grippiness” if it gets dusty?

No. Once the tape sticks to itself it becomes like a solid piece.  I used in an emergency to wrap it around a rubber loop that was breaking apart. The loop supports a motorcycle speedometer cable and it's located on the front fender of a motorcycle.  Needless to say it gets a lot of dust.  The tape blended so well and has done such a good job that I haven't bothered to replace the rubber loop because it's still holding strong after 4 years.

Question 3

I used meister stickelite tape on my pull up bar and it has an awful sticky residue on it now. will that impede this product's ability to work?

Accepted Answer

The residue shouldn’t impede the Fusion tape from being applied and it should function well for your pull-up bar.  However, since there is residue on the bar, it could be difficult to remove if you ever need to replace.

Question 4

Does it pull off the finish on the bars after you take off the "Tape" And does it wear fast (We have 5 classes a day)?

It will not take the finish off since there is no adhesive.  It should last a long time but it is not permanent.
