I thought about a title and put it as such reason being is that a friend has the whole Kutzall set and I was always envious about these disks but I'm finally on my own path in owning a complete set starting with this. Pricey, yes. I won't lie. Quality, yes. I'm very impressed. A true case of 'you get what you pay for.' I've not put a ton of hours on this disk however I've done a number of projects enough so that I feel I have a good idea of how my own disk behaves. Just like my friends disk, zero issue and shapes a concave very fast. If you don't have a wind to carry away the dust I would strongly suggest at least a cheap paper dusk mask. This will throw dust and lots of dust! I guess one way you can tell if a tool works, if material is being removed and this will most defineately do that job. Because the pattern of the pins are as such, it's non directional so if you put force this way or that way you'll get the same result. Some other type of shaping disks are directional so that you need to always work in one way so you have to move your piece or you have to move however that is not the case with this type of disk. One fact that I quite enjoy actually. If wood collects between the pins you burn it off (but I'd hate to ruin the paint) or what I do is to just use a steel brush. Can also carve convex shapes with a bit of practice but this disk really shines with the concave tasks. I'd love to try some of the other products but those are on my x-mas/birthday lists. What would you like for Christmas? she asks, TOOLS ! i reply. An honest review from a dedicated woodworker

The Kutzall Extreme shaping dish is brilliant! It removes material really well, even on a very dense wood like Padauk. It doesn’t catch (so long as you don’t jam it down hard on the wood. But then, why would you? Unless you really have no clue about safety…) So easy to clean off if it gets packed with sawdust, either burn it off or wire brush it. (I use a wire brush, much safer to not use naked flame it a workshop filled with wood and various flammable liquids) There are other makers of these shaping dishes out there. Some MUCH cheaper and some more expensive. Avoid the cheaper versions (buy cheap, buy twice) and why pay WAY over the odds? The Kutzall is priced fairly IMO and a great piece of kit.
