Can you use a sleep number bed?

I would say yes you can always call the store and ask if you can use an adjustable base with it

why does the included control box clearly state "this control box us designed only for dental unit!" ?

Have no idea, maybe your dentist knows. I had problems with the directions also. My friend & I pondered over how to make it work. We finally used the directions to locate parts but had to out think the person making up the directions. It only took us about 3 hours to get it put together correctly!

are the legs optional? I want to set this directly on a different base, so if anyone can tell me how the legs attach an if they can be left off.

The legs are an integral part of the assembly. I don't think they are optional. You can set up the legs on a higher base if you like but I don't think you can get rid of them.

Why am I seeing a $79.99 delivery charge that wasn't there before?

Check your prime status, might make a difference. Right now I don't have prime and I am showing free delivery if over $25.... HOWEVER, THRE MAY BE AN EXCEPTION FOR OVERSIZED ITEMS. I would call Amazon via contact customer service (they call right back)
