Very good game. The clues were fun, you had to be very thorough. Get paper and pencil and take good notes!

There are always mixed reviews about HAK’s one-off boxes. The thing is these are escape-room style murder mysteries so a certain level of being convoluted is to be expected… I mean escape room + murder mystery, it can’t be cakewalk! (This box is rated 4 stars out of 5 for difficulty). The thing is I have seen some really poor reviews about this set but someone who’s done Death at the Dive Bar, and Mystery at Magnolia Gardens, I’d still give it a try. At least the components do look cool

This review is for HAK: Murder at the Motel. This is my 3rd Hunt a Killer game, and my least favourite. It's not that I wish I hadn't spent the money on it, but so far, the other two (Death at the Dive bar, and Death on the Boardwalk) had more satisfying outcomes. Maybe I expected more because it was rated a 4/5 difficulty, but we found it to be easier than ones that were rated easier! This game is similar, there's a locked box and clues on how to open it. Plus various letters, print-outs, a photo etc. My main issue is that there's really only one (pretty easy) puzzle to solve, and then you know who it was. But then you're left wondering, why are there some other items included? And once we had the locked box open, it only added to the confusion if we had the right answer or not (we did). We finally opened the solution envelope, which confirmed we had the right person, but it doesn't explain a lot of things we still had questions about. The HAK series makes you go to their website and give them your email address so they will email you a fuller epilogue, but that didn't work. No email arrived, and I read on other sites that other people had the same issue. All in all, it killed a couple of hours, it's always fun to crack the code to open the locked box, and there are some trinkets you can keep and even use if you don't pass the game on. Otherwise, I look forward to some more challenging editions that make a little more sense in the end.
