This is a quality brand compass and there were no issues with the item.The only issue I have is with the delivery as it was left in the 'STREET'!The Amazon delivery instructions as to the safe location where to leave it were crystal clear but still it was left in the Street at the front gate.Anyone could have just walked off with it.At least they would be able to navigate their way!!!

This is a specialist piece of kit with the main reading in Mils that would be unsuitable for teaching beginners to navigate with and is not really necessary for the average hill walker for whom degrees are entirely adequate. It's called "Militaire" for a very good reason!Having taught my son to navigate in degrees using a conventional compass I bought him this one as he plans to join the Army and will need to be familiar with navigating in mils. Like any Silva Compass it is excellent with all the necessary scales etc plus a good long edge for setting course between two points. Although the main (outer) reading is in Mils there is also an inner graticule in degrees. My son has quickly adopted to it and I quite like using it too.It's well made, robust and easy to use with gloves on. In the right hands very accurate navigation is possible but of course in that respect its only as good as the person holding it!

I bought this compass pre covid with a view to getting out and exploring more.No sooner had I bought the compass and then covid hit and I put the compass away I a drawer and forgot about it until now.Now it states clearly that its main measure is in mild rather than degrees but as a novice I did nt understand the significance.By all means go ahead and buy it if it is a mils compass reading you want but just be aware the degrees is very hard to read and I would advise a degrees measured compass.I am disappointed in the compass f or that reason alone but otherwise it is a quality product. Just no use to me I’m afraid so just take care that it’s what you want.

What can I say. Another fantastic compass from Silva. The long base plate is just the right lenght for lining thought on a map. The facility of both Mils and degrees gives me other uses but at the same time allows me to teach my partner and step daughter more about navigation and takes me back to my forces days.Easy to use, good romers of differant scales clearly marked and even a differant coloured lanyard so It can easly be identified from my degress compasses at a glance. The ilumination on the base plate and needle work well in the dark. Only slight draw back and I mean slight is the degrees are a little hard to read.

Excellent for the price. I highly recommend it!

There's always going to be that great debate of degrees v's mils but as an ex military man mils just reassure me with their increased accuracy. I don't tend to navigate off my compass as i like to just read the map and navigate from features but when the mist comes down and visibility is lost i always know this little baby will keep me on track or triangulate accurately when lost. When in doubt trust your bearing and not that internal compass of yours that's constantly thinking it knows best.

I bought this a couple of years ago and found it to be perfect, even on exercise. The only thing that is missing is the amazing glow you get with the issued compasses.If you are looking for a back up compass, or just one for training by yourself to get used to Nav, while working in mils, you would struggle to go wrong with this.

My compass points dead south. I've never seen a compass do that before. It made me laugh because I know these are very good compasses so I guess ill have to get another one.Update, I took a magnet to it to get it pointing the correct way again. Now it works just as well as I knew it was able to.

This is rated by Silva as a military compass. It cannot be used for night patrol where light discipline is the whole issue. All the other crucial luminous points light up brilliantly. But the north end of the needle does not light up at all. This is a highly rated compass in Britain. I first saw it on a popular orienteering instructional video series. The baseplate has all the features needed for military and civilian land navigation. It is the favourite of the instructor in the videos. I have to seek reimbursement as this particular compass is a dud. I am so disappointed.

Arrived broken. Needle inconsistant and unreliable. Returned as per instructions but failed to be received. Finally returning to me. Unhappy.

Sehr guter Kompass für die Kartenarbeit.Dank der 6400er Einteilung auch im Aktiven Dienst oder als Reservist sehr gut zu gebrauchen.Dort erweisen sich die integrierten Planzeiger in 1:25000, und 1:50000, sowie die Schablone für das ein einzeichnen eines Bezugspunktes als nützlich.Zum Peilen gibt es sicherlich bessere Kompasse, dies ist jedoch auch nicht die eigentliche Aufgabe eines Kartenkompasses, es lässt sich aber auch mit dem Silva Ranger 4 eine Kteuzpeilung ermitteln.
