The button is flush with the case and needs to be pressed and held with an appropriately-sized tool, so it couldn't be operated by accident even if it was repositioned. I suspect it's only on the back because that was the most convenient (and therefore cheapest) place to put it given the layout of the internal board. I haven't had any of the problems other reviewers have noted with the sticky pad, because I'm not using it - in fact, I'm not sure it even came with one. If you're using it in the steering wheel clip, you don't need a sticky pad, it's firmly held in place by the sides of the clip. The very first day I put it into use, I accidentally knocked it off the steering wheel as I was getting out of the car, and after I picked it up off the floor it wasn't working. I thought that maybe the battery had become dislodged, but re-seating it made no difference. Volume and Play/Pause work perfectly too. I did come across one issue, though: when connected, my phone thinks it's a physical keyboard, so my on-screen keyboard won't display for song searches.
