This is the first formal study of pick-ups in judo ever made-and therefore is a milestone in judo literature. This may appear strange because many of the throws in this book have formal Japanese names and a long-standing tradition in judo. Yet, the truth is that despite this history, few of these attacks have been regarded as classical techniques to compare with seoi- nage or uchimata . The traditional view is that while throws such as morote-gari and sukui-nage are seen regularly in competition at all levels, they have been seen as an adjunct to the main body of judo techniques-barely tolerated imports from other combat systems such as wrestling or Russian Sambo. However, the last 30 years-since judo became an Olympic sport-certain outstanding exponents have demonstrated that pick-ups are truly effective tools in the hands of a skilled competitor. They have been developed into genuine techniques, with a wide range of variations, gripping possibilities, combinations and counters. Few champions are more qualified to undertake this first account of Pick-Ups than Robert van de Walle, the Belgian light-heavy weight who has become almost a legend in his own time. He had an extraordinary contest career, winning the Olympic title in 1980, numerous other medals and titles throughout the decade, and a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1989 although he was already in his mid-thirties. Van de Walle's premise has always been that morote- gari and other pick-ups, when performed well, do not need excessive power; and he proved it by making them work not only within his own weight category, but against much heavier opponents in open weight category events as well. Now retired, he has put his experience into open forum, giving judokas of all ages tips that have never been seen in print before. Review: good buy - even that most pick ups are mostly banned in judo nowadays, it's still worth learning them from this book to complement your judo. different view at it from good pick up specialist. Review: A great book but now outdated! - I bought this book based on other reviews and from what I'd read about the Judo Masterclass Technique series. It is well written, provides good photos and explanations. I'm returning to judo after a long break and hadn't realised that 'pick ups' are no longer allowed (new rule i understand from 2012). So bear in mind when buying the book that you won't be able to put what you learn into practise on the mats. Still a great book but if I'd known before I probably wouldn't have bought it.

WORLDCLASS BOOK!!!
A worldclass book written by a worldclass JudoKa. Van de walle gives detailed descriptions and variations to the three comman pickups, Te guruma, Morote gari and Kata guruma. The book clearly shows that Van de Walle has extensive knowledge of these techniques. Also the book shows proof of the effectivness of the techniques by showing photos of them in use in competition. Along with references to other comman pickups by other great JudoKa from the past, this book is a serious must for any martial artist interested in perfecting there pick ups!!

A great book, written by a great champion
Robert Van de Walle is without any doubts one of the biggest champions modern judo has ever known. His superb technique and tremendous judopower in combination with his spartanic training methods, made him to a world-wide respected judoka. He's the 1980 olympic champion under 95 kg. (he won the final with a spectacular counter against Russian's Kubhuluri in Moscou). Even when he was already in his mid 30's he won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In this excellent book he shows us in a clear way the most effective attacks, counters and sutemi-waza. Many of these techniques applied by Van de Walle are nowadays known as "Russian Judo". I bought this book 7 years ago and untill now it's definitely the best one published in the Ippon Books series. Robert Van de Walle's book is indispensable in each judoka's library.

Very good instructional book
Very good instructional book. More detail & usage of modern photography techniques would merit 5 stars. Hopefully judo competition rules will revert back to allowing 'below the belt' techniques ASAP.

Great book!
This is a book that realy made a few "aha" thoughts for me. Good picture series and explanations to the pick-ups so this isn't anything to hesitate over! Buy it and improve your competition on the Tatami.

A classic.
Judo Masterclass books. I think every judoka had worked their way through one of these at one point. Always interesting and informative insights from those who are famous for the use of the technique. Some are becoming quite rare. I hope someone considers reprinting them one day. Too bad in the case of the particular volume the IJF has run amok with the rules and rendered it useless for all but historical reference.

Masterclass lo dice todo
Como todos los títulos de la serie Masterclass, de primera calidad. Explicaciones claras y buenas fotografías ilustrativas. Muy buen precio comparado con otros títulos de la serie.

A thing of beauty -- but you have to save the techniques for your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.
