Great for ESPhome
I got these to install ESPhome on to work with Home Assistant. I've only used one so far, but have a Bluetooth relay and BLE beacon running on it, which works great

This device works OK with Arduino IDE once the correct software has been installed
Once installed and the correct software installed on arduino IDE the only problem was sorting out how to upload sketches to it, and when to use the "reset" and "boot" buttons. Once I got used to to the procedure I successfully contacted my router and others in the area. I will be writing sketches to make the unit into a station and client.

Brilliant piece of kit!
Inexpensive and far more versatile and powerful than an Arduino. With increasing exposure I'm sure this will soon have a huge following as happened with Raspberry Pi and Arduino.

Excellent Follow Up
This company followed up to provide data sheets and support. It was not needed, but the effort made after sales is excellent.

Said it’s a 32u, it’s not, it’s the older, more buggy version.
It’s still an esp32, but not the specific version I was after, the older 32 has well known issues that the 32U or UE version has fixed.

Often fails to power up
These are the ESP32-DEVKIT-C V2 boards, with the old design reset circuit and the old ESP32-WROOM chip. The ESP32-WROOM-32D has been out for a long time, so it's surprising to see these old and troublesome boards still popping up. I find that these boards will almost always fail to boot when powered from an external 5V power supply - the board goes into BOOT mode with the LED blinking. They'll start when you press the RESET switch, but this isn't practical when you need something to run unattended. I've used the HiLetgo and JZK boards with the ESP32-WROOM-32D chip, and they have been fine. Look for modules with the ESP32-WROOM-32D chip, not these old-stock parts with worse specifications.
