Can I use it on a cage for my guinea pigs on the outside of course for the winter

You ask can you use it to cage your Guine pigs outside this winter,I would use it in between water poof lining,but be on the safe side ask you local pet shop.all the best

will it cover woodchip

I would recommend rubbing the woodchip over with sand paper, just to knock off any high or loose chips. Ensure the paper is well glued. Use a thick solution of wallpaper paste and apply to the surface. Then roll across the wall the poly, paper. Should cover OK then apply your finishing cover. But alway best if woodchip is removed..

Is it strong or will it rip easy?

The one I had went on well but once it's wet with paste it does tear easily when you're smoothing it out etc. Although I think there are different thicknesses you can buy.It's also better to cut/trim with scissors instead of a Stanley knife as the blade can sometimes drag instead of cut which then tears the polystyrene.Hope this helps.

Can you paint on to this without covering with lining paper first

It is not smooth but has lots of tiny spaces between the polystyrene beads so painting over will leave the gaps unpainted unless you give it many coats to fill them. Best to put lining paper over the top with a suitable adhesive before painting. You can now buy an insulated lining paper which is much more expensive but ready to paint and saves time and more durable as the 2mm insulation on its own is very easily damaged and crumbly.
