Can't really answer your question as I use mine on a Sony 32", however I'm sure whatever the Sony does (industry standard?) the LG will do? Its a low power demand drive designed for this use, go on order one you can always send it back? Good luck!

would I be able to archive my Sky+ recordings on this machine to free up space on my Sky box?

Both Sky and Virgin use encryption technology to store all programmes on their boxes, including those from the ‘normal’ terrestrial broadcasters. You cannot copy the contents to anywhere at all, as Sky+ recorded content can only be viewed when decoded by the software on the Sky+ box. There is no solution to this.
