Review: Good - Good game
Review: Heading in the right direction - Slight improvement over PES 2017, not nearly enough to make it the best PS3 football game (and probably one of the last) but just enough to make it a worthwhile purchase. Its basically the same game as 17 but with minor tweaks. My review will focus more on the Master League as that is what I mostly play: Menus: they've been redesigned and are very easy to navigate. Gameplay: tweaked in ways I can't describe! (not very helpful, I know). Apparently they've slowed the play down but its not very noticeable. The game flows very well, player movement (on and off the ball) is great and cross field passes and through balls are very intuitive. Corner kicks are a lottery, the ball direction arrow has gone and its a matter of trying different 'after kicked' manoeuvres to alter the flight of the ball - all very hit and miss, perhaps it just needs more practice (I rarely do training mode though but will give it a go). Penalty kicks have been improved with a crosshairs target - much easier. Game Commentary: I've always liked the commentary and Drury and Beglin's commentary is virtually the same as last time with some dropped and some seamless additions but once you've heard Beglin's 'wages' gag a couple of times you realise it can be quite repetitive, playing for lower division teams seems to trigger different phrases. Transfer system: more in-depth negotiations have greatly improved everything and it has better depth. The transfer deadline day hourly countdown is still there... only of interest if you are involved in the transfer market, can be a drag otherwise. Presentation: garish blue/green especially on the replay sections which unfortunately can't be deactivated. Not very classy and a let down. Edit mode: a must if you are not online and can't download the proper kits/team names. You can now create additional kits for the licenced teams too but the menu for the editor is the same and could be loads better if put into a logical order to avoid unnecessary button presses. For instance, during the course of editing details over time the only thing you'll ever change are the kits so why have that option hallway down the list? The default kits have a lot of detail and its a pain having to manually delete each little bit of kit - a 'delete all' option would be easier. As would a way of matching shirt number font sizes and shirt styles over all the kits for a single team so it need only to be done for one kit and the rest follow suit- everything should remain customisable but made more user friendly. Commentary team names should include generic 'not infringing copyright' phrases such as: United, City, Rovers, Villa, Town, County, Rangers etc as some teams are only covered by the city names: Aston Villa has to be Birmingham! QPR: London etc etc. Overall: a high quality game which some will avoid due to the lack of licensed teams but its very in-depth and the fantastic gameplay is EVERYTHING!
