The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems edited by June Crebbin will absorb and delight girls and boys aged 5+. A great first poetry book; the poems span time, from Robert Louis Stevenson and Walter de la Mare right up to date with Roger McGough and Michael Rosen. Themes covered, such as mealtimes, playtime, animals, family and bedtime, really appeal to youngreaders. A truly lovely collection of all-time favourite poems. June Crebbin is an ex-primary teacher, now a full-time writer. She is in great demand for author visits and runs very successful writing workshops in schools. June has written a wide range of children's books and writes poetry for children and adults. She lives in Leicester. Review: A great introduction to poetry! - I bought this book for my 6 year old Granddaughter after reading the excellent revues from parents and teachers. After a quick glance through it, I am sure she will love the poems and delightful illustrations. Review: Great to encourage beginner readers - My five and a half year old granddaughter usually drags her feet when I suggest reading practice, though she loves being read to. However, she loves reading these poems. The language is simple enough for her to read with help, there are short ones and long ones, and lots of illustrations too, which makes it look appealing and accessible. She is just getting into humour, and having picked her way through a short poem, was delighted at the funny punchline, and wanted to practise it so she could read it aloud fluently to her grandpa. And then another and another. We got it from the library, but I have now ordered our own copy from desertcart.

Jolly collection
Our 8 year old grand-child and the rest of the family have great fun with this book, which is filled with excellent illustrations next to poems that demand to be read. Its now a regular treat to circulate the book and take turns to read verses. Good to find poems from the old favourites, like Robert Louis Stevenson and Ted Hughes. But its the fun element that makes it a winner.

Great 1st poetry book
Bought for 6yr daughter who showd interest in poetry at school. She really loves this book, it has a good mix of funny and traditional poems and I regularly find her reading this on her own.

Great for children aged 3-11
We got the shortened version as part of the Bookstart scheme, which we loved, but worth buying this full version as there's even more good poems. Great for reading time when the kids are fed up of "reading scheme" books. Often read at bedtime with my two children and I taking it in turns to choose and read a poem. Many of them we have read over and over again.

Just the best book of poems with plenty of funny things that children love.
If you are a new grandparent MAKE SURE you get one of these to read to them, covers many ages and stages. Lots of fun to read. They will adore 'Big Bert and the Cushion' and love 'Katerina Wilhelmina Theodora Dobson who goes home for dinner' and very soon be reciting bits back to you.

Poetry delight
Excellent used book in pristine condition. 8yr old granddaughter loved it & started reading & reciting poems immediately. However just one issue, book & envelope appeared to smell of cigarettes.Rectified by putting talc between pages & leaving in sun. Would still buy from seller again

Delightful
Bought this for my 3 year old nephew. He absolutely loved it and can recite the whole book already. The rhymes are like a whiff of fresh air even for adults

Highly Recommended
I stumbled upon this book quite by accident. While I trying to look for a book to introduce poetry to my 4.5 year old. It covers various themes, animals, night-time, meal-time, family etc and is a mix of known poets like R L Stevenson to the obscure 'anon'. With the humour and silly nonsensical poems, the book is a perfect first introduction to poetry. Beautifully illustrated, this book is a favourite. Mine as much as the kiddos :)
