No these are for splitting rocks not wood. They would just sink in and not do anything. You need to either get a splitting wedge for wood or a splitting maul. Has anyone tried these on thicker concrete? I have a piece 3ft x 3ft x 12" thick that I'm hoping to split into smaller sections.

I have not split concrete, but I have easily split granite thicker than 12". Watch examples on youtube.

Should I use 5/8 in or 3/4 in carbide drill bits?

Use the drill bit size of the shims (feathers). 5/8 drill bit for 5/8 shims. You can always enlarge the hole if necessary. Important - do NOT drill deeper than the length of the shim.
