I Had Absolutely No Use for This Axe… But That Yellow Handle Had Me
Let’s be clear: I do not live in the woods. I don’t chop logs. I don’t even own a fireplace. But the moment I laid eyes on this Roughneck hand axe with its glorious yellow handle, I knew I had to have it. Why? I have no idea. Maybe it awakened some ancient instinct. Maybe I just liked the colour. Either way, it now lives proudly in my shed like a relic from a rugged past I’ve never had. I’ve used it exactly once — to split a bag of kindling I didn’t need, just to prove to myself (and the fence panels) that I could. It made me feel powerful. Like a man who forages, not one who Googles “how to descale a kettle.” The handle? Brilliant. Comfy, grippy, and bright enough that I won’t lose it under the lawn clippings. It feels like it wants to be swung dramatically. Even just holding it gives me the irrational confidence to nod solemnly at trees. In short: I bought this axe for the vibe, not the utility. And I regret nothing. It’s the most dangerous-looking thing I own, and I love it like a pet I’m slightly afraid of. Five stars for style, feel, and unnecessary but deeply satisfying ownership.

Well made, well balanced tool
My purchase was of the smallest option weighing-in at 1.25lb (~0.5kg) and I bought this hatchet to chop away a small tree stump that was in a confined space where a larger axe would not do. Out of the package, the axe head has a rubber protective strip along the cutting edge. Removing this reveals an edge that is pre-shaped and adequately sharp *but* a little time spent honing the edge will pay dividends. Without teaching to suck eggs, remember that sharpening a blade properly is a skill that does not come easily to everyone and badly sharpened blades will end up more blunt than they were at the start of the process! The axe appears well made and the handle is nicely shaped - the only thing that I would say is that it looks to me as if the blade is permanently attached to the handle and could not be replaced if needed. In use, the axe is well balanced and easily hefty enough for chopping firewood or splitting kindling etc. It was perfect for the use I had in mind and with a little elbow grease, the stump was soon reduced to slightly below ground level (job done)! The blade remained sharp throughout and appears to be made from good quality steel - even a couple of accidental bashes on a surrounding concrete post did little damage other than to put tiny nicks in the blade which was a relief. I put an edge back on the blade after the impact with the concrete but aside from this (expected) maintenance the tool performed well.

good built quality and weight
Really good quality little axe, great for splitting small logs with ease, probably exactly the same as more the expensive brands and does the job perfectly

Bit Blunt, But Gets the Job Done
I bought the Roughneck ROU65640 Axe for light chopping, and overall, it’s a solid little tool. The build quality feels sturdy, the handle has a good grip, and it’s nicely balanced — easy to swing and control. It did arrive a bit blunt, so maybe making the job extra tough. It’s definitely not a heavy-duty axe, but for its size and price, it’s handy to have around. Would have rated it higher had it been a bit sharper
