Composition in Art: An Introduction (Dover Art Instruction)

As a photographer, the best book I ever read on composition. Recommended to me. Exceptionally written, I suspect by a very wise man. Not a word wasted. Every image in the book is examined and explained. No philosophy, nor exercises. Just how an image(s) works. A great book.

Composition is a very complex subject, so finding a concise and useful book is always going to be difficult. There is some useful analysis in this volume but I feel it could have been better presented (illustrations are not very good) and the scope much wider. In hindsight, I would probably not have bought this book.

La qualità delle fotografie è pietosa, non si riesce nemmeno a capire cosa rappresentino alle volte. Le spiegazioni sono spesso molto caotiche, arbitrarie e senza esempi. Quando per esempio menziona i 'piani assiali' non ne dà una definizione univoca o correlata al contesto in cui usa questo termine da qualche esempio. Il libro è difficilmente fruibile, acquisto non consigliato.

A good explanation of the fundamentals of composition. I have other books on the subject but this one explains it in a way that works for me. A Dover reprint of an older edition. Some colour plates in the book, otherwise black & white. Recommended for your reference library.
