This is not an encyclopedia in the usual sense of a book with entries arranged in alphabetical order. There are a large number of black and white photographs and neat pen drawings of tattoos, accompanied by descriptions and context which are detailed enough to make this book useful to serious students of Soviet/Russian society and the Gulag prison camp system. Readers of Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Irina Ratushinskaya will find material to interest them here. Men's and Women's tattoos are depicted, with motifs ranging from the sentimental through the profanely offensive to the blackly humourous. This is a nicely produced book with cloth covered hardback binding, embossed on front and back covers. As recently as 25 years ago, it's contents would have had limited relevance outside of the Soviet Union. But given the increasing globalisation of crime today, police officers might this book useful, if only to get an idea of what they might be dealing with on a bad day at the office.

Dieses Buch hat mich bewegt. Ich selber habe Verwandschaft aus dem Osten, und hab schon das ein oder andere Buch über Schlesien, Rußlanddeutsche und Wolgadeutsche gelesen. Aber das Buch, die Enzyklopädie im Generellen hat es mir auf eine Art und Weise angetan wie es selten ein Buchreihe geschafft hat. Ich hatte vorher bereits von der Russischen Unterwelt gehört, wer kennt sie nicht die Typische Russische Mafia die in Film und Fernsehen ihr dasein bestreitet. In den Büchern wird von dem Leben als Krimineller in den Sovietisch / Russischen Gefängnissen erzählt. Wie die Hierarchien verteilt sind, wer was zu sagen hat und wer nicht, und es wird auch auf die Brutalität und die teilweise schiere Unmenschlichen Zustände Bezug genommen. Wenn man erst einmal versteht, welche Bedeutungen diese Tätowierungen haben und welche Lebensgeschichte dahinter steckt dann hat man eine solch Melancholische Empathie. Ich meine damit nicht, dass man es toll findet Straftaten zu begehen. Sondern dass der Weg in die Kriminalität bei so manchem Alternativlos gewesen war. Ich kann auf jeden Fall empfehlen sich alle 3 Bücher zu kaufen. Die Zeichnungen sind sehr anschaulich und das Buchband ist auch schön Dekoriert. PS: Sehr dazu zu empfehlen ist die Doku "The Mark of Cain" (Youtube).

A rich source - a treasure chest - for the interested! Very seriously investigated, this book offers a deep look into original russian tattoos, a fascinating explanation and analysis included. The pictures are documentary - don‘t expect artwork. Highly recommendable!

Un ouvrage très bien détaillé, qui met en lumière la signification des tattoos qu'arborent les criminels russes, du plus petit au plus grand. Avec photos à l'appui, il nous fait entrer dans cet univers très fermé où le tatouage n'est plus un simple signe d'apartenance à un groupe, un gang, et moins encore un caprice de rockstar en mal de reconnaissance... Ici, chaque tatouage nous fait pénétrer un peu plus au sein de la pègre russe en nous aidant à comprendre le sens caché de chaque travail d'aiguille. Un livre indispensable pour les vrais aficionados de tattos, mais aussi un book intéressant pour les simples amateurs de tatouages style "zonzon" ... A découvrir (ainsi que les deux volumes précdents), pour embellir votre bibliothèque d'une belle petite collection à prix très attractif.
