"One death, in exchange for thousands of lives - it's simple arithmetic!" A new translation of Dostoevsky's epic masterpiece, Crime and Punishment (1866). The impoverished student Raskolnikov decides to free himself from debt by killing an old moneylender, an act he sees as elevating himself above conventional morality. Like Napoleon he will assert his will and his crime will be justified by its elimination of "vermin" for the sake of the greater good. But Raskolnikov is torn apart by fear, guilt, and a growing conscience under the influence of his love for Sonya. Meanwhile the police detective Porfiry is on his trail. It is a powerfully psychological novel, in which the St Petersburg setting, Dostoevsky's own circumstances, and contemporary social problems all play their part. Review: The Slater translation is one of the very best - Nicolas Slater has corrected many of the shortcomings and overall clunkiness of the highly touted but unevenly translated version of C&P by Pevear and Volokhonsky from 1992. I found Slater's 2017 translation to be superior to other earlier translations included the now somewhat dated English language version by the brilliant Constance Garnett. Slater retains the color and character of the original without the dissonance of being overly literal. Kudos to both the translator and Oxford for this work. Review: Very good! - Nice hardcover and material, the pages paper is thin but still good, the font is perfect, this looks like a very good long lasting copy, good price for a hardcover copy, perfect for a gift! :)

a page turner
My favorite Dostoevsky. I could not put it down. This read like a good Hitchcock psychological thriller. Also the human condition is expertly portrayed. Many fascinating social points of view. I also have read The Idiot which I would place close to this. And the Brothers Karamazov which I would place third. I highly recommend the Oxford World's Classics edition for all of these (what do I know about translation) footnotes and overall quality.

The struggle of an innate conscience versus society’s demands and the cleansing power of love under all circumstances however simple that love’s expression may be.
I love the dialogue, construction and willingness to analyze thoughts snd movements of feelings as they relate to thinking. I do not quite enjoy the book being built to last and last for commercial reasons.

Hard Covered Book
Nice classic book, with a cloth hard cover. The pages are of reasonable quality, and the print is clear. I bought this for my son, who wanted it for Christmas. The boy does love his classics, and this was a good addition to his personal library.

Haters Gonna Hate
Let the haters keep hating. They probably haven't even read the book.

This is a very nice edition of Dostoevsky
This is a very nice edition of Dostoevsky. I don't know Russian so I can't judge the new translation (the translator's other works are highly regarded), but the binding and printing is excellent. Could not think of a classier way to give Dostoevsky as a gift.

Low quality print
I would recommend considering a different publisher for this book. The pages are extremely thin, to the point of being nearly transparent (you can see the text of the following page), which can be quite distracting while reading. Additionally, the text is small and the line spacing is minimal, making the overall reading experience less comfortable. The production quality feels quite low.
