Can you use this for Christmas lights? Thanks

Yeah you can, don't let people tell you that you can't.HOWEVER: This unit IS NOT waterproof at all, but since your question makes you sound like a DIY extremist like me; you'll figure out a way to case it. (Personally I use a sprinkler timer box that's water tight, drill some holes in that sucker and attach some leads with solder if you feel like it.)It would also depend on the type of software you wanted to use it with. I'm currently using 5 of these in a Light-O-Rama network. (E.1.3.1 to Dmx 3pin, then into the chain of dimmers.) If you need a good dongle, I'd either recommend the HolidayCoro or an Enttec Pro.

is this quiet and does it have a switch only mode?

Quiet? It's silent Switch only? Yes it has this mode but you need to set the proper dip switches and then send it a dmx control signal of more then 50% to turn it on

Does any body use theses in master slave mode? I'm trying to use it as the master with a different dmx controlled dimmer as the slave

Address it to the same address as your dimmer you want to have it copy. Use in DMX mode not slave mode. The Dimmer should overlap channels and respond to the same DMX signal no matter what made or model of dimmer if the channels are overlapping.

Does this unit make a lot of noise? I am trying to replace some noisy dimer boxes I have that are old.

no. seems quiet. we also use wireless in ear monitors and mics and i dont pick up any dimmer pack noise
