J C Leyendecker: American Imagist

I was a little on the fence about getting this because the price was high and because I wasn't sure yet where Leyendecker places as an artist for me. It's still a little blurry to me, on one hand it feels like kitsch, where many paintings feel banal and naïve, with exaggerated emotions. But from technical side it's clear that Leyendecker knew art fundamentals well and certainly knew how to bend and apply them. It's an interesting study subject for me.

Fantastic book, I only wish it was even longer, all of the covers for the Saturday evening post are included, however the majority of them are very small measuring 7.5cm by 6cm so for anyone looking to use these are reference or masters studies be warned that your favourite could be in this format, very nicely printed with a lot of great insight and text

This book is packed with wonderful illustrations of this much loved artist. I wished there were more in large format but given the amount of work the artist produced, I suppose its not possible. A must have book for any artist

I had never heard of this artist but brought it on strength of the recommendations and am very glad I did. Fascinating how a gay couple (the artist and the model) had such an influence of contemporary American culture, that fact will have a few choking on their pumpkin pie! Great illustrations throughout, masses of them, and intersting text that doesn't seek to deny the real lives of those concerend (for good and bad). Essential for anyone interested in American culture and / or gay history.

This book has beautiful high quality full page images of Leyendecker's work and gives interesting insight in to his life and work process. What more do you want from an art book?

Leyendecker was one of the great and successful commercial illustrators of the early twentieth century and has influenced generations of artists over the years. He comes with an interesting history, which this book does its best to convey. All in all a great book.

This is an great quality book with excellent content. Apart from showing us amazing high quality art it also tells us who JC was in real life most which was a mystery before this book. There us alot of art in this book but it cannot contain all of JC's work in full size so many magzine covers have been published in a smaller thumbnail view. This is the only sad part.

I attended the recent show at the New York Historical Society showing Leyendecker's work. It was small, but well worth seeing. In advance, I wanted to learn more about the artist, and this book does an amazing job. Although Leyendecker let a rather reclusive life and didn't leave much for biographers to comb through, the authors of this book found just about every item about his family, life and work as an artist. They give a really full picture of the man, how he become a first rate illustrator, and was a the forefront of many new trends. First, the quality of the book itself is high. The colors are saturated and the images are well printed to see detail. Second, text is well written and balanced. Third, I really learned a lot about the graphic arts industry during his lifetime, how it changed it, how important it was to American life, and how the medium changed forever. It was a real eye-opener. The actual images are beyond gorgeous. The drawn men are what every man wants to be -- handsome, virile, and a consummate gentleman. The details of the images are jaw dropping in their virtuosity, and you wonder how any human could draw so convincingly.
