Description
Saxon math programs produce confident students who are not only able to correctly compute, but also to apply concepts to new situations. These materials gently develop concepts, and the practice of those concepts is extended over a considerable period of time. This is called "incremental development and continual review." Material is introduced in easily understandable pieces (increments), allowing students to grasp one facet of a concept before the next one is introduced. Both facets are then practiced together until another one is introduced. This feature is combined with continual review in every lesson throughout the year. Topics are never dropped but are increased in complexity and practiced every day, providing the time required for concepts to become totally familiar. The student workbook includes student fact cards. Grade 1.

good for a strong math base
My first 3 kids went to a charter school and they used this program (starting with Math 1 in kindergarten). They had no problem following along. Then we moved and they were so far above their peers (slightly frustrating but not much we could do-just glad they had a good base). But I can’t stand the program our district uses now for our younger kids starting out. The papers have so many pictures and colors all over them-it’s confusing! So when my next kiddo started kindergarten I purchased just these Math 1 workbooks (no teacher manual) and we do them after school in place of his other “homework“. They take 10-15 minutes to do front and back plus a math fact sheet. I love the simplicity and repetition of them, plus he gets in some reading with them. I’m planning on getting Math 2 to start as soon as we finish these. If we continue I’m sure I’ll need the teacher manual, but for now these are simple enough to teach him the basics. Plus I remember enough from my older kids to understand some teaching concepts (double+1=?, for example).
