Is the game board made of cardboard as well?

Odd question. Yes, as are all game boards that fold...unless they are wood. In that case, the cost would be very high.

Square #1 has a ladder, how would that possibly be used?

Maybe you start OFF the board and not on #1. Then if you spin a 1, you go up the ladder.

How many squares does it have?

It has 100 squares. When you land on a square with a ladder you go up. If you land on a chute your player goes back down. My 5 year old grandson loves it.

Will I get the version as shown above, or will I get the newer version? What year was this one manufactured?
