An epic BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' last completed novel, interweaving various characters in a complex tale of greed, passion and death in Victorian London. John Harmon (Steven Mackintosh) is betrothed to the beautiful-but-spoilt Bella Wilfer (Anna Friel), who only wishes to marry for money. Then Harmon disappears, and it seems that he has drowned, but he has in fact assumed a new identity and found work with his late father's former employees, the Boffins (Peter Vaughan and Pam Ferris). Meanwhile, impoverished Lizzy Hexam (Keeley Hawes) must choose between the selfish Eugene Wrayburn (Paul McGann) and the obsessive Bradley Headstone (David Morrissey). Review: Romance, comedy, tragedy, what more can anyone want? - We thought the acting and the adaptation excellent, a worthy reflection of the novel, even if it did cut out the Fledgeby plot and thereby lose that wonderful pepper scene. If we have a criticism it is that Mr Wilfer was too tall... he is constantly described as a cherub, a little man, and it changed the dynamics of the family to make him tall but easily bullied. The Boffins were perfect, and as for Gaffer and Rogue Riderhood, they couldn't have been bettered. We also loved Timothy Spall as Mr Venus, Kenneth Cranham as the villainous Wegg, and best of all Neil Morrisey as Bradley Headstone. He made the character so believable and pitiable. Review: Excellent Service - Arrived on time. Excellent quality! Thank you!

Thoroughly enjoyable
Beautifully acted and produced and enjoyable in it's own right. There is still much of the book which has had to be lost and that's always a shame, the best production of a Dickens for me still has to be Little Dorrit, it really sets the standard and I hope more will be produced to the same standard. However, given that small misgiving I thought the performance of Paul McGann as the dissatisfied and drifting Eugene Wrayburn was played to perfection. Perhaps the best of all was the strange repressed sexual obsession of Bradley Headstone (David Morrissey) - frighteningly good stuff. Get it by all means, the quality of the acting of the two above make it worthwhile alone, and there are many other merits just waiting in store for you.

Our Mutual Friend
This a wonderful novel which kept me on the edge of my chair for a week. Read the E book version on my I Phone. Very easy once you get used to the flicking over the screen but this becomes automatic quickly. The characters are so well drawn and you can see their descendants in everyday life today! There are two main wonderful love affairs and Dickens excels at describing the villains. It is a great holiday read. Charles Paterson

Edited the life and bones out of it - don't buy - buy the full original series.
I loved this series when it came out and decided to watch it again after many years. I downloaded it from Prime video got myself comfortable and settled down. However, it became apparent that there were big parts missing. I even went over each series again thinking I may have somehow fallen asleep and missed parts. It turns out that hese parts have actually been edited out but this crucial fact was not obvious at all on Prime Video It has completely ruined the series and makes the rest of the watching nonsensical as it now jumps around with nothing to link the characters - Bella and LIzzie for example suddenly appear to have known each other for some time though their actual first meeting has been edited out. It is such a shame for those who have not seen the series before and is watching this hack job. It would now appear to be the worst adaptation of a Dickens novel I have ever seen, which is most certainly was not originally. And why has to been the main question here? If I bought a pair of jeans, I expect both trouser legs! If I buy a DVD or download, I expect the whole film or series.

Excellent dramatisation, poor editing
I am an avid Dickens fan and have read Our Mutual Friend at least once a year for the past 30 years, I have listened to the audiobook (narrated by David Timson) and I have seen the earlier adaptation starring Jane Seymour. This version starring Anna Friel and Steven Macintosh is by far the better screen version. I have this version of DVD too. The casting is excellent (although Mr Wilfer should have been smaller and meeker), it is by turns dramatic, funny, sad and passionate. The bits of the story that were missed out of the TV show were superfluous, and any changes have not changed the story too much. My only quibble is the editing for Prime. The picture should have been adjusted to fit the size required as sometimes things are happening off screen, also bits are cut that were in the DVD. Apart from that, highly recommended.

Suffers from being cut
The original BBC drama of Our Mutual Friend was a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel and a wonderful production. Sadly this 'Season' suffers from being cut with the loss of an important strand in the novel exploring the social condition of the rural poor.

Excellent production
Super story, well acted, nice costumes and architecture. I am a Dickens fan and love his range of eccentric characters. These are well portrayed and being in an episode format there is opportunity to develop the roles. Definitely worth 5*

If you are a Charles Dickens fan and like movies with a slower relaxed pace, this one is very good. It took a while to get it after ordering, but was worth the wait once if finally arrived. Should work on most devices in the US.
