After years of idyllic living in a seaside island village, insurance salesman Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) begins to see signs that things aren't as perfect as they seem. He discovers that he's the "star" of a continuously broadcast TV show that's aired since his infancy, his friends and family are all actors, and his hometown is an elaborate set. Ed Harris, Laura Linney, and Noah Emmerich also star in director Peter Weir's compelling satire. 102 min. Balances Satire with Sincerity
The Truman Show is one of those movies with a premise so absurd that it should completely fall apart, yet somehow it works beautifully as a human story. The idea that a man could unknowingly live inside a giant televised fabrication is obviously ridiculous, but the movie grounds it emotionally so well that it becomes believable where it matters most. At its core, it is not really about the mechanics of the show. It is about loneliness, performance, control, and the constant struggle to remain authentic while living inside a system built entirely on paid deception. This is also one of the few Jim Carrey performances that truly works for me. In many of his other movies, his exaggerated style and constant overacting become exhausting, but here he uses restraint in a way that makes Truman deeply sympathetic instead of irritating. He feels like an ordinary person. He makes faces in the mirror, talks to himself, follows routines, and assumes nobody is paying attention. That normality is exactly what makes him relatable and emotionally compelling. What makes the movie especially effective is that the supporting characters are believable despite participating in something horrifying. Technically, almost everyone around Truman is helping commit a massive fraud against him, but the performances prevent the film from turning into a simplistic story about cartoon villains. Most of these characters feel compromised rather than purely evil. The movie understands how people rationalize harmful systems when those systems become normal to them. The details in the performances and set design say a tremendous amount about the characters. Truman’s “mother” having a huge portrait of herself displayed prominently tells the audience almost everything necessary about her priorities and personality without needing explicit explanation. Laura Linney plays Meryl with a convincing selfishness that slowly leaks through the cheerful performance she gives Truman. Small moments reveal that her concern is less about Truman as a person and more about maintaining her role, protecting her own comfort, and making the big bucks. The most interesting character aside from Truman himself is probably his best friend, played by Noah Emmerich. He understands on some level that what is happening is wrong, and genuine affection for Truman still comes through in his performance. That conflict makes him more complicated than the others. At the same time, the movie never lets him fully off the hook. However much he cares, he still chooses the system over his friend in, which makes the relationship tragic instead of comforting. The Truman Show succeeds because it balances satire with sincerity. It criticizes voyeurism, entertainment culture, and manufactured reality while never losing sight of Truman as a real human being trapped inside it all.

Surprisingly Sweet...and Dramatic...
Who thought Jim Carrey could do drama. Well, he does it rather well here. You'd barely associate the man you see on your screen with the likes of Ace Ventura, Lloyd Christmas, or Stanley Ipkiss. Truman Burbank is sweet, charming, certainly naive, and unknowingly the world's biggest television star. This is one of those movie premises that you don't think will work, but it works in this film. The way this world was built around our leading man to keep him in the dark is conceivably possible, though one has to wonder how the guys behind all this got the money to create this world...it had to cost a few million, or even billion, dollars. I also thought the casting of Ed Harris as the head producer was a bit odd as it seemed to be a subdued role for him...I'm just used to seeing him in roles where he is able to let the whole room, and the audience, know that he is present and is to be respected accordingly. To get my point (hopefully I'm making one), watch Con Air. But Mr. Harris actually did well, even though I wanted him to be more in-everyone's-faces as in his other movies. But he didn't do badly. Overall, I liked this film and I'd watch again somewhere down the road. One nice thing that this movie doesn't do is give a predictably ending right from the first minute...you really can't figure out anything about the ending, so there is a sense of suspense, eve if there's not supposed to be. It's a good film and actually allows Jim Carrey to show some range in his acting ability...some range...there are still a few, probably unintentional, callbacks to the movies that made him a household name. But he did good and the movie was good. A solid four stars. Enjoy.
