This best-selling progressive 46 page encyclopedia of rock/funk patterns for all tempos, utilizes a new contemporary teaching style for independence, rudiments, styles, and more. Review: Great practice book for building grooves - A Funky Primer for the Rock Drummer is an excellent resource for beginner to intermediate drummers looking to build muscle memory for grooves. The exercises are practical and effective. While the notation isn't up to modern standards, it's straightforward enough to get used to. Definitely a great addition to your practice routine. Highly recommend. Review: A fun introduction! - I'm a beginner (with a background in other instruments and reading music), slowly but surely learning by working through some of the classic books. This book has quickly become one of my favorites. It has already helped a lot with independence and coordination between the bass drum and right and left hands. It is also written in a way that works well for my learning style: lots of short exercises that introduce new concepts, followed by longer exercises. Unlike some other books, it actually feels like playing music! I have no idea if/when I would actually use the grooves from this book, but the concepts are a great start toward learning other grooves and writing my own. Along with the classics (Stick Control, Syncopation, 4-Way Coordination, etc.) this book is a great introduction to the drumset.

Bent but pages inside are clear
The pictures I attached shows how the book I received doesn’t look very new because of the lots of bends on both front and back. Not sure why when I took the pictures it makes the book appear more white compared with the actual book being more blue. There are good things to play inside the book and is clear. Just the covers and the bending of the book makes it look used.

Great book to get you started on funk
If you're reading this, it's probably because you're a fellow drummer like me who loves and is interested in learning funk drumming. I've been drumming for about a year now and this book is great for getting you started in this style. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the section where you learn various snare patterns. This section is helpful because funk is all about the varying and syncopated snare hits. I'm still using this book and it's been fun to learn from. Combine this book with other funk studies books AND listening to great funk bands (especially listening to the drummer) and you will develop and acquire the necessary feel for funk drumming. This is a great book especially if you've been wondering how to learn funk drumming that is geared to more or less a beginner. Happy drumming and may you keep on improving!! Peace and love

Funky Primer; an excellent beat book for the aspiring drummer
This small book covers a lot of ground. A section for stick control. A must for intro reading of notes. Basic beats for rock. Hand moves only to introduce syncopation (the unexpected note), and then beats which cross over from funk to rock on many levels. Great book on graphics. Simple notation. Great for beginners and even the playing drummer for very nicely placed beats. Also a rare testimonial by the great Carol Kaye. I highly recommend this book for its content and generous spirit.

Blast from the past
I first learned drumming when I was 14. Haven't played since I was 17. Decided to put up the old drum set for the kids. Fun book to get you started.

The music teacher ”Do as I say” vibe
Great book, I’ve been playing for years but fell out of it. Easy, straight forward instructions that tell you what to do. Listen to the book and you’ll gain independent limbs.
