There are three power sources - 4 x AA batteries, an internal battery which can be charged from the USB connection and the capability to connect to an external alarm system. The battery life is nothing like the 6 months that is claimed - max 3 weeks for a set of AA batteries (both alkaline and LI-Ion have been used).
