RYOBI Stud Finder with Multiple LED's to Indicate The Full Width of The Stud. One-Handed Operation, ESF5002

I had to pierce a garage wall in a few spots before I caved and tossed aside my old stud-edge finder to pick this up. This stud finder is effective and accurate, and the multiple LEDs help provide a much more accurate idea of a stud's location compared to an edge finder. To top it off, this stud finder has an almost stupidly simple design feature that should be the industry standard: A button on the center of the unit that pushes out a punch to easily mark the wall behind it. The punch itself is effective enough to dimple drywall, but I think it would be easy to put some form of ink or toner on the end to make surface marks instead. The only drawback I can see is the price, but then again it could save you some drywall rework with missed stud holes.

Need to find studs under double boarded drywall. It took some practice on how to use the finder but it worked! So pleased to have purchased this tool

It's Ryobi so you know the build quality is decent. However there are a few little annoying bugs (as with all stud finders). The first and biggest, is that it's sometimes tricky to calibrate and you need to calibrate for every wall. You will usually find yourself attempting to calibrate a few times before taking a successful read. The other down side is that there's no way to tell what material it's detecting - you need some knowledge of the walls/electrics to understand what your read means. In the end I found myself using this in conjunction with a basic Bosch metal/electrics finder. That together with some background knowledge of the build helped me get through the job. Outside of those limitations, the Ryobi stud finder is useful and gives some indication of the width of studs.
