The fit is true to size and they are extremely comfortable, even walking long distances during travel. The leather uppers "break in" quickly and have elastic bands around the heel piece for a smooth fit. The first few times you put them on will be snug, but as they conform to the shape of your foot it gets easier, like a favorite pair of jeans. I have high arches, narrow heels and a wider ball/toe area and have found that Merrell shoes fit very well. My smallest toe ends between the two front straps but it has not caused any discomfort because the overall fit is so good. These shoes do NOT have extra-grip soles, and were a little slippery on steep, muddy trails, so I do not recommend them for hiking conditions. In general a wonderfully comfortable walking shoe. All my Merrells have outlasted many other similar shoes by other manufacturers. After 1.5 years of wear, they are still very comfortable and has a lot of wear left yet. They look more worn, but I think that just makes it better. These are probably a pair that I would keep buying again whenever the current ones wear out (which I hope won't be for some time).I usually wear a size 8, but I think I could've gone with 7.5. But the 8's are ok, too. So I just kept them.These are super comfortable and stylish. I got them to wear on those walking days. I live in China, and thought these would be perfect for a day out to Beijing, shopping and hiking the Great Wall, etc. So far I've worn them around during my holidays in D.C., Chicago and L.A. I thought they might chafe my feet a bit, but they are wonderful. I was wrong however, they have softened a little and fit my feet like a glove. I can wear them all day, and walk all over the place and my feet do not hurt one little bit!
