The Art of Lent: A Painting A Day From Ash Wednesday To Easter

I was looking for something beautiful to meditate upon this Lent, and I've found it in this book! This is a very small book, so don't expect to be able to see vivid closeup detail of the paintings. The reflections for each day of Lent can feasibly accompany the paintings, but cannot really be said to be interpretations of the paintings themselves. They are however, deeply spiritual and wonderfully profound, if simple, meditations on some of the themes of Lent (repentance, forgiveness, humility, peace, contemplation, silence, purification, love, etc.). If one encounters each painting and reflection with a prayerful mien, this little book could be a wonderful Lenten companion! Thank you, Sr. Wendy.

I am so happy with this book because the art is beautiful, Sister Wendy’s writing is worth rereading because I highlighted about half the text, and it was a spiritual experience. As if she was there , her words lit up my spirit as she described things in the paintings I had overlooked visually and in some of Jesus’ experiences. It felt like worship to contemplate these things more deeply with the sensory experience added (Visio Divina) The language does not make other denominations feel excluded and I appreciate that. I will gift this to my friends.

The artwork and reflections are very nice, but the small font used made it difficult for me to read.

Take your time. Consider each painting and how it speaks to you. Actually I sometimes 'hear" the words in Sister Wendy's voice! I am using for a second Lent. Size is easy to carry to contemplate at different places. I have computer researched the art to learn more and then see colors and details more clearly. Some are parts of paintings. All and all a wonderful devotional to use for Lent or anytime of year.

Loved this book. A new approach to a prayerful Lent. The commentary was insightful.

I would give the content 5 stars and the design 1 star. Every entry is so far into the bound margin that you can barely read the last word on each line. It is difficult to fully open the book to read each entry without breaking the spine. The font is maybe 6 pt. and gray. There's a ton of negative space, which is aestheticly appealing for an art book, but for a devotional, could have been reduced so that the font size could be readable. This is a pretty but impractical layout.

Sister Wendy Beckett is wise and insightful. I’ve loved this devotional.

Well it is possible for me to use this valuable little Art decorated Book every LENT. It was one of the last little Books written & organized through Sister Wendy Beckett who past away 2yrs ago aged 98yrs of age. Throughout USA, United Kingdom & Europe recognized the extreme Art History knowledge that Sr. Wendy Beckett had obtained after many years firstly as a Teacher and then from years at Oxford. AMAZON thankfully you have many of the late Sr. Wendy Beckett's books which I am most grateful.

Absolutely lovely but smaller than expected. That said, reading a daily thought about the art and God from Sister Wendy is such a pleasure. She was an absolute gem of a woman and incredibly thoughtful.

A lovely book with a wide variety of paintings to help the reader in self-reflection and also to reflect on the themes of the season. An ideal gift for those who like art, even if they are not religious, and a perfect size for carrying around. I have used it with a church study group and it has been much appreciated.

This is a very worthwhile Lent book and you can hear Sister Wendy's voice in the words. There are some interesting choices of painting. The only thing that stops it getting 5 stars is that the size of the book means some of the pictures are shrunk too much to see them clearly.
