Zack Davisson's new addition to the growing field of English-language scholarship on Japanese monsters adeptly straddles the gulf between popular, if sometimes poorly-sourced, yokai reference works and densely argued academic tomes which may be off-putting to lay readers. This book neatly solves that issue. It is both well-researched and eminently readable, with plenty of fun anecdotes and details to keep the content riveting. The inclusion of a truly astounding number of full color, high quality images also makes it incredibly visually pleasing to browse and explore. Highly recommend this book to both general readers and those seeking to deepen their knowledge of Japanese monsterology. As a professor of Japanese studies, this book is certain to be my go-to text for future courses on yokai studies.

Purchased as a gift for a teen with an interest in Japanese history and art. They are very happy with this book as a source for enjoyable stories and fun art to practice the style.

Mr Davisson is a manga translator and comics writer by trade and absolutely does his Japanese subject matter justice, with great depth of knowledge and an engaging writing style. I usually balk at books that call themselves 'Ultimate' anything but in this case that's just marketing, this is all very well-presented and solid lore.

This is an excellent volume for learning the lore and context for a huge variety of Japanese mythical creatures. Highly recommended.
