The galaxy is burning. With the Cielcin united under one banner, the Sollan Empire stands alone after the betrayal of the Commonwealth. The Prophet-King of the Cielcin has sent its armies to burn the worlds of men, and worse, there are rumours... whispers that Hadrian Marlowe is dead, killed in the fighting. But it is not so. Hadrian survived with the help of the witch, Valka, and together they escaped the net of the enemy having learned a terrible truth: the gods that the Cielcin worship are real and will not rest until the universe is dark and cold. What is more, the Emperor himself is in danger. The Prophet-King has learned to track his movements as he travels along the borders of Imperial space. Now the Cielcin legions are closing in, their swords poised to strike off the head of all mankind. The fifth novel of the galaxy-spanning Sun Eater series merges the best of space opera and epic fantasy, as Hadrian Marlowe continues down a path that can only end in fire. Return to the Empire
Book five in the science fiction space opera series 'The Sun Eater.' And this far in it's not a jumping on point. New readers start with book one 'Empire of Silence.' Regular ones read on. This volume is four hundred and ninety seven pages. Forty one chapters. And is the format of the series as before. Narrated by Hadrian throughout. There's the usual cast of characters and appendix at the end. Strong violence as well as ever. Picking up from the end of the last book, he is heading back to the Empire. The alien threat is getting worse. And even greater conflicts await... Another winner of a volume. It does take a little while to get Hadrian to his destination and of course he does have a lot of introspection to go through. But this doesn't drag. Thanks to the quality of the writing being as focused and readable as ever. Once it gets to it's destination though the action and the intrigue really do kick off. And I can't say anything much about what then happens, save for it being epic stuff. At the heart of it all is Hadrian and his narrative does hold you. And I really can't talk about the ending of this volume at all. It's bold writing. It is very impactful and I won't forget it in a hurry. It does leave him and the narrative in a different place. Clearly set up for a lot more to come. Two big books in fact. This series does seem to know where it is going. This is another important chapter in that. And one I won't forget. At all. It makes me want to see what comes next so it's done it's job. I look forward to it, Quality science fiction and another winner of a volume.

Another good read
The series continues to get better as the stakes get more and more taxing for Hadrian Marlowe. This book was great in the sense that you have your really slow parts a lot of the times at the beginnings but the action, fighting and heart break in these books are worth the wait.
