What's the battery life like? I'm guessing it takes a watch battery?

the battery life is months to years. We have one here that we turned on the first day they came out, and it is still on. It takes a common button style battery.

Is there a backlight?

not really. i also thought it was tablet size not card size. i was disappointed when the package got to me.

What is the maximum number this can go to? i run a lifelink deck in mtg and can easily hit over 1000+ life.

It has only 3 digits. 999 is the maximum. I notice I have to push the buttons firmly coz its hard. It's not sensitive. Once in a while you have to double check if it actually + or - life. Legion lifecalc has a softer button and you don't need to push the power button to turn it on. You can push other buttons it turns on. MOJO strictly power button only on/off. Its a matter of feel and likes.
