I really have no idea what the 1-star reviews are about. From the time the Amazon box arrived until the sensor was connected and displaying data took less than 10 minutes and it has been running for weeks without interruption. It's about 100' from the valve and the gateway device and connectivity hasn't been a problem. The soil moisture values compare favorably with a different handheld meter I have, and the temp matches another thermometer +/- a degree or two. Programming the sensor for the desired soil level wasn't hard if you read the directions and it's been working correctly, delaying watering as long as the soil moisture is above the preset level. This is a great addition to my garden and drip irrigation system.

Its really confusing to set up because you would think you add it as its own device in the app but only after you add the wifi water timer can you connect the sensor by clicking into the wifi water timer, then going to the sensor tab and then flipping the grey soil sensor switch to green (on). Right before you flip the switch though you have to hold the small pairing button down under the battery compartment lid for 5 seconds so the light turns red. Once I did that I had no problems. It immediately then started reading the temperature and soil moisture and surprisingly my lawn was over watered so I think this thing will actually come in handy. That said I wish it was smaller. I dont want to kill a patch of grass on my front lawn to have this installed so I have it installed with most of the body sitting over top of my walkway with the prongs pushed into the grass…its not ideal but it works.

Connection to device is constantly dropping. Doesn’t really go longer than 10 minutes before the connection is lost. Despite how close you might be placing it to the wifi timer. It will just continually drop the connection. The quality seemed good enough, but in application this falls short. Instructions are clear but accomplish nothing. As the trouble shooting is vague and leaves much to be desired. In short, before buying this device, maybe consider sticking your finger in the ground daily. As I’m sure that would yield better results.

Wow it works saves over and under watering

It’s a pain in the ass to get it to connect. It burns through batteries 3 sets a season and worst of all you can’t even control your RainPoint valve with it. When all is said and done it does give you a moisture reading which is why I gave it two stars.

I originally purchased the Rainpoint WiFi Sprinkler timer because of the wifi in the name, that would enable me to adjust the watering from the comfort of my house etc, as weather and plant size dictated. That worked just fine, but it was still a matter of guesswork, especially if I was away from home and unable to see the results. Then I found there was a moisture meter - this product - that talks to the timer to tell it about the humidity in the soil, obviating excessive water use and the negative impact thereof on the plant and water table. It was a bit awkward to set up, took a few tries to understand the instructions particularly because I wanted to change the default base humidity level. The first one I had suffered a technical anomaly after a few days. The support was courteous and immediate, I received a replacement in no time. This product about halved my water use this growing season while keeping my plants healthy. Highly recommended.
