How securely do the phillips bits fit into JIS cross-head screws?

The Phillips bits fit securely with little to no play.

If the bits are 5/8” tall why is the case so tall? Is there anything in the top half?

The bits are 5/8" tall. The case is 2-3/8" thick and the lid alone is 1-1/8" thick with nothing in it. I don't know why it is so thick but it is a really nice case. Hope this helps.
